A cold front is expected to bring sustained below-freezing temperatures to the local area between 19 January 2025 and 21 January 2025. To ensure your safety and the safety of your family throughout this winter weather season, please read the following safety tips:

Freezing Temperatures:

If you plan to travel, make sure your vehicle is winterized and carry emergency supplies, such as food, water, and a first aid kit. Inform someone of your destination and estimated arrival time.
Limit outdoor exposure to only necessary activities, and dress warmly in layers to protect yourself from the elements.
Bring pets indoors during extreme weather conditions to prevent hypothermia and other health risks.

Preventing Frozen Pipes:

Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas, such as the garage or basement.
Cover outdoor faucets and hoses to prevent freezing.
Let water drip from the faucets.
Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
Seal any drafts or leaks in your home to prevent cold air from entering.
Maintain a consistent thermostat temperature to help prevent pipes from freezing.

What should I do? There is nothing you need to do unless you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant or
are elderly. These people may be at increased risk and should seek advice about drinking water from their health care
providers. Although the health risks associated with our levels of total trihalomethane are low, there are steps you can take to
further reduce levels in your household or office drinking water. The easiest and most cost-effective way to reduce total
trihalomethane levels in the drinking water is to filter it with an activated carbon filter.

What does this mean? This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some
people who drink water containing TTHMs in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver,
kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

What happened? Altus AFB conducted compliance sampling for TTHMs the 2nd Quarter of 2024 and received a Notice of
Violation for Disinfection Byproduct Rule (DBPR) beginning the 3rd Quarter of 2024. This was due to a Notice of Stage 3
Water Conservation Restrictions that began 8 February 2024. This included major construction at the Altus Water Treatment
facility that temporarily limit production capacity to 75%.

What is being done? The City of Altus is actively working to complete renovations and upgrades to the water treatment
system with an estimated completion date of July 2024. Bioenvironmental Engineering will continue monitoring these
contaminants and keep you informed of any changes.
