With Independence Day quickly approaching we would like to strongly suggest getting your pets microchipped and up to date on their vaccines! Fireworks are a scary thing for pets and can cause them to run away! Microchips help ensure that your pet can be returned to you should they get scared and run off. As everyone know pets can lose their tags, collars, harnesses, etc. but they can't lose a microchip! Keeping your pet up to date on vaccines is always highly recommended but especially if you are going to be traveling, even if it's just to a different city, and during holidays as the risk of them getting sick increases! Now is also the time to refill anxiety medications, check fences, and make a game plan for making sure your pet is secure during the festivities! Crates/kennels are good to keep your furry friends safe and secure inside while people are in and out of the house. Make sure when you let them out to potty they have all their identifications on and take them out on leash or keep a close eye on them if they are in a fenced in area. Also remember people love to celebrate not just on July 4th but typically that whole week so make sure you have enough antianxiety medications if your pet needs them and a safe, quiet, comfortable place they can hide before and after July 4th! If you see a pet without an owner remember they are scared and don't know what all the loud noise is so approach calmly and slowly. If you have another secure area to keep them away from other pets till you can check for tags or have them checked for a microchip at a veterinary office or animal shelter please do so as you would probably want someone to do the same for your fur babies. No one thinks it could happen to them until it does, no one is at fault. Animals can be tricky and become escape artists when scared no matter how old, lazy, or "unfazed" they normally are. So here's a check list for everyone in the short time before the celebrations!
*Check fences/tie outs and ensure they are secure!
*Check ID tags and microchips to make sure they still have the correct information! And make sure they have them on!
- get pets microchipped if they aren't already!
*Double check to make sure your pets are up to date on all vaccines or get them up to date before the festivities!
*Call your vet and make sure you will have enough antianxiety medications for your pets should they require them!
-Recommendation: keep a piece of paper in a highly visible place for everyone with the day and time meditation was given to avoid accidental double dosing!
*Have a crate or kennel set up and ready to go for a safe place to keep them once the fireworks start!
*Have leashes and treats by the door ready to go for potty breaks and possible bribes if they do manage to get out!
*Make a game plan with anyone else in the house including kids that may be old enough to open doors and make sure everyone is on the same page!
SHOULD YOUR PET GET OUT! Post on pages and other social media apps, report it to their microchip company, file lost reports with your local shelters not just the city you live in (animals can make it really far in a very short amount of time!), and don't forget to actually go into your surroundings vets and animal shelters to see if your pet has been brought in!
FOR CATS, we recommend leaving their litter box outside and some dirty clothes of yours so they can find their scent and yours and try to make it home safely!
We hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July!
