My dearest grooming clients,
When I started in this industry 34 years ago, I was shocked at just how low the cost of grooming was.
Back then, it was about $15-20 per dog, and I would get half of that when I worked for someone else.
I thought "This is an awful lot of work and should be at least $60 for a full groom!" But I was young and new to this business and so I went along with those prices in order to get and keep clientele.
Now, 2 decades later, I have slowly raised my price up to that $60 mark, but as we all know, that money doesn't get you near what it would have back then!
Now let's compare what groomers make to other service industry providers such as hairdressers and massage therapists.
Most that I know in this area charge roughly $70 for an hour of their time.
Each dog takes a MINIMUM of 1 1/2 hours. Most take about 2-3 hours, sometimes more.
Massage therapists and hairdressers don't have to clean up p**p or puke or p*e.
You sit or lie still for them.
They dont have to worry about being scratched or bitten.
They don't have to get into full on wrestling matches and hold you down in order to trim and file your toenails.
Hopefully, you don't show up to your massage or haircut having not bathed or brushed your hair in over a month.
They don't have to squeeze your a**l glands and wash your dirty butt.
Nor do they have to pull out the disgusting wax covered hair from your ears.
They don't have to pay state sales taxes like groomers do, which I include in my prices.
Grooming is dirty, stinky, hairy, exhausting, literally back breaking work.
We work with sharp tools on moving objects. It requires skill, strength, and patience.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have so much love and respect for hairdressers and massage therapists, and I believe that they deserve every penny they charge, but so do groomers.
We certainly don't deserve to make less!!
I have had so many rude comments about my price increases. I've had people stop tipping me after over a decade of caring for their babies, just because I went up a few bucks.
If you are unwilling to pay what I need to charge, please know, NO HARD FEELINGS!!
I will still love you and your dog even if you take them somewhere else.
Don't worry about me. I have a waiting list of people who want me to groom their babies, and I turn people away every single day.
While I do consider it a privilege to get to spend time with your puppers, belly rubs and nose kisses don't pay my bills.
Remember, we don't get insurance, benefits or paid time off. Supplies, equipment and upkeep are expensive!
Not surprisingly, groomers are a dying breed. I hope all of my fellow groomers will share this post and start charging what you are worth!
It takes a special person to do this job. Stop taking your groomer's time and energy for granted!!
We are worth more.
