In light of recent events, we know everyone has a lot of questions and concerns. At Bluebonnet, we want you to know we truly care about the nutrition and safety of your equine companions— because we know they are more than just horses, they are family too! We wanted to provide answers to some of the commonly asked questions:

❓ What is an ionophore?
🅰 Ionophores are commonly added to feed for cattle and species other than horses to improve feed efficiency and prevent coccidiosis. They work by increasing cell membrane permeability, which helps with the transfer of molecules in and out of cells.

❓ What is Monensin?
🅰 Monensin is a common ionophore used in the U.S., along with salinomycin, lasalocid, laidlomycin, and narasin. *Much like Tylenol is a brand name for acetaminophen, Rumensin® is a brand name for monensin. Ionophores are often referred to by brand names.

❓ What is the difference between Ionophore-Free and Ionophore-Safe Mills?
🅰 An “ionophore-free” facility does not use ionophores in any feeds for any species, eliminating all risk of contamination. On the other hand, an “ionophore-safe” mill produces some feeds with ionophores and relies on a series of flushes to clean the system before manufacturing horse feed.

➡ Bluebonnet is an ionophore-FREE facility. Bluebonnet chooses to *eliminate* the risk completely by not allowing ionophores on the property. We take it one step further by making sure our ingredient suppliers also share the same safety values.

❓ Can a mill make cattle feed and still be ionophore-free?
🅰 YES! Not all cattle feeds are dangerous for horses. While feeds containing ionophores are a serious risk, some cattle feeds are made with ingredients that are safe for horses.

➡ At Bluebonnet, we take extra precautions to ensure the safety and quality of our products. In fact, our cattle feeds are made with horse-safe ingredients, so they do not pose the same risks as those containing ionophores. It's always important to check the ingredients and consult with your feed manufacturer to ensure the safety of your horses.

❓ What questions should I ask or what should I clarify when inquiring about my feed company’s ionophore stance?
🅰Open-ended questions such as: “What ionophores are allowed on your property?” The answer to this question immediately lets the caller know if the facility is ionophore-safe or ionophore-free. (If the mill says they are a monensin-free facility, follow up with inquiries about other ionophores.)

Panhandle Reined Cow Horse Association Red Dirt Rendezvous Results

🥉Dylan McDaniel and Dual Rey Mitch ended up 3rd in the Limited Hackamore Open!
🏅Dylan also showed Just Call Me Blessed at his first show. He handled a tough cow for his first time out!
🏅Ally Latham had a great weekend taking her gelding, ShortStop, to his first NRCHA show!

It was a great schooling show for everyone. Next up, off to Oklahoma for the Hackamore Classic!
