This 1-year-old, 9-pound bundle of energy is a true helper around the house... or at least, he thinks he is! Sweeping? He’s there, turning the broom into his personal toy. Dusting? 🐶Our featured Pet of the Week is Harpy. This handsome fella is a four-year-old Heinz 57 Mix. Harpy sports a short, tan coat with a spotted muzzle and authentic brown eyes. Weighing in at 76 pounds, standing 26 inches at the shoulder, he is a sturdy boy!
🦮This handsome fella was surrendered to us when his family was no longer able to properly care for him. Harpy is the type of guy that needs some time before he will trust his human(s). He is very loving, well trained, and very athletic. Harpy loves playing fetch with his trusted adults. He is a bit afraid of children so we think he’d do best in a home with mature folks. In his previous home, he was not socialized with other dogs or cats.
🐾The perfect home for Harpy would be adults only, country life, where he wouldn’t be alarmed of children or strangers. Once you get to know this handsome fella, he is a dreamboat; His sweetness is sure to win your heart. Harpy is very food motivated, which means a continuous training regime and socializing in a controlled environment is recommended and would be very beneficial to him.

Santa visited AMHS today! Boy, did we have fun! We would like to send a HUGE shoutout to Santa Paul from Amery for taking time out of his busy schedule to come and spend the afternoon with us. We got some really cute pictures (see our page) of adoptable pets and our supporter’s pets and/or family members. We will definitely be asking Santa to join us again next year!

GUESS WHO IS COMING TO AMHS? You guessed right, SANTA! On Sunday, November 17 at 1:30pm, we will be welcoming Santa and his elves for a fun afternoon of photos with your pets, cookies and cider, and treats for pets and kids, and 2 free ham drawings for participants! Pictures will be taken with your personal device by our wonderful volunteers (I mean elves), or we will take them with our camera and email them to you! We are so excited for this fun event. Free will donation asked, but not required. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to come into the shelter and take a tour, meet our adoptable pets and staff, and to learn more about our mission and values.

The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that by having your pet spayed or neutered, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted animals. What's more, you could be setting your pet up for a longer life, as studies have repeatedly shown that spayed or neutered dogs and cats live longer, on average, than other dogs and cats. This advantage is likely due to the health and behavioral benefits of the procedures.
Established health benefits include protection against some potentially serious diseases. Spaying female dogs and cats can prevent uterine infection and reduce the risk of breast cancer. Neutering males can eliminate their risk of testicular cancer and reduce their risk of developing enlarged prostate glands (known as benign prostatic hyperplasia).
Behavioral benefits relate directly to the decreases in certain s*x hormones that occur after spaying or neutering. Removing a female dog or cat's ovaries eliminates their heat cycles and generally reduces mating-related behaviors that may frustrate owners. Removing a male dog or cat's testicles reduces their breeding instinct, resulting in less roaming and fewer urine-marking behaviors.

Jennifer is a gorgeous two-year-old, spayed female, Calico with a heart as warm as her stunning coat! Her coat is mostly white with gorgeous orange and black variations on her head and tail. To the left of her cute pink nose, is her tangerine-colored beauty mark. Jennifer’s striking amber eyes are sure to coax you in for a snuggle.
