We were given the go ahead to remove Bob’s stitches at 2-weeks post-op. His incision site looks great, there’s no sign of infection, and he’s off all meds. He goes back in for an x-ray in 2 weeks to make sure that the pins haven’t shifted and that the repair surgery was a success...🐾

This is Bob’s sister, the only girl in the litter. She’ll be staying here...🐾

02/18/2020

We tried giving Bob a playmate who wouldn’t be too rough with him, but instead he thought that Tiny (who is another success story that we haven’t shared yet) was his own living, breathing chew toy. So, Bob is back to being alone...🐾

I’ve been remiss in updating the last couple of days because I’ve been really sick but I’m starting to feel a bit better today. Bob is as happy as ever and is doing very well...🐾

02/15/2020

Last night went a whole lot better for Bob (and us) than the night before and we even got by without the anti-anxiety meds (although it was nice knowing that we had them just in case). I thought about the suggestions of clocks and special beds, etc. but I’d really prefer not to create a long term crutch for him. He’s learning how to self-soothe and I think that will be best for him and his eventual family in the long run. He’s pretty chill tonight. He’s settling into his new routine and is thoroughly enjoying being pampered and doted on. He is so full of himself...🐾

02/14/2020

Hopefully Bob will sleep better tonight than he did last night. He was so upset about being separated from his littermates that he cried off and on most of the night and was so hoarse this morning that he sounded like a goose. We tried letting him sleep in bed with us but then all he wanted to do was play, give kisses, and bounce around. I definitely didn’t want him falling off the bed so I put him back in his pen and laid down on the floor with him for a couple of hours. As long as I was by his side, he was quiet, but as soon as I snuck back to bed, he started right up again. I don’t want stress and agitation to impede his healing so I called the vet’s office this morning and explained what was going on to see if they could give him something to take the edge off his separation anxiety. The doctor prescribed another med to be given at bedtime to help him sleep better. I would have liked to go the natural route to relax him (like CBD oil or Rescue Remedy) but they prefer to use drugs that they know won’t affect the other meds that he’s already on. He’s sleeping pretty soundly now; let’s hope that he sleeps through the night...🐾

He will be so happy when the kids get home from school. Natalie is our puppy whisperer and will spoil him rotten. Bob being on the road to recovery will also make Logan’s birthday...🐾

The tough part now will be keeping Bob quiet. He doesn’t like this isolation business...🐾

Bob is home and is doing amazingly well!! They sent him home with pain meds, anti inflammatory meds, and antibiotics...🐾

02/11/2020

We just received this photo from our vet’s office with the following text:

“Hello! Here's an update on Bob. Bob is still groggy from the anesthesia, but waking up well. He's snuggled up in a bunch of blankets and resting comfortably. 🙂”

Dr. Lynda called when she was done with Bob’s surgery. She was able to repair his leg with 3 pins. She said that the location of the break shouldn’t cause his leg to be much shorter than the right one after all. Since he’s a dwarf breed, if the leg is shorter, it won’t be very noticeable. That was awesome news!! The difficult part going forward will be his aftercare. He needs to be kept quiet for 4-6 weeks; no running, jumping, wrestling, or rough play of any kind. The bones need to heal around the pins and since the bones are so soft at this age, any shifting could drastically affect his prognosis or cause the necessity for additional repair. We can pick him up in the morning and they want to see him in 2 weeks for the removal of his stitches. Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers...🐾

Little Bob is in surgery right now having his femur repaired. Our regular vet’s office has a board certified orthopedic surgeon so we were able to keep him local for his procedure and the follow-up appointments that he’ll require. Dr. Lynda only does surgery on Mondays and Tuesdays; she was fully booked last week and yesterday, so today was the soonest she could get him in. She was anticipating that she’d be able to repair his leg with pins but we’ll know more once he’s out of surgery. Dr. Tom said that leg will be considerably shorter than the right one and there may still be the possibility that it would need to be amputated later in life. They both felt that it was best for Bob’s quality of life to at least try the repair first before resorting to the loss of a limb; we fully agreed. A huge thank you goes out to all of the staff at Community Animal Hospital for their fantastic service and the superior care that they provide to their patients and their families...🐾

We had a very unfortunate accident yesterday when I took Paisley & Ruby’s pups to the Winnegamie Dog Club for their 8-week show evaluations. Ruby’s shaded red boy was stepped on and his back left leg was broken; the x-ray shows that the head of the femur was snapped right off. Dr. Mendez, the on-duty veterinarian at Appanasha Pet Clinic, was kind enough to let me bring the puppy in for an emergency visit, even though we’re not regular clients of theirs (our regular vet is over an hour away from where we were and had already closed at noon), instead of making me take him to the far more expensive Animal Referral Center Fox Valley. After the x-ray she consulted with Fox Valley, since the treatment he’ll require is beyond their capabilities at Appanasha, and she was told that for an injury as extensive as his, he’ll need either rods and pins (estimated at $2,500-$4,000) or to have the leg amputated (no estimate given). They recommended that we bring him in to see either one of their surgeons or another orthopedic surgeon this coming week. Dr. Mendez gave him an injection for pain, an oral anti-inflammatory, and sent us home with a 6-day prescription of anti-inflammatory meds. He’s in a lot of pain but they’re very limited on the pain meds that they can prescribe for a pup as small as he is (2.6 lbs).

He was so happy when we got home last night and he started wagging his tail the instant he saw Natalie. He’s eating, drinking, peeing, and pooping normally. He needs to be kept separate from his littermates and have only limited supervised contact with Ruby. She let him nurse a bit last night; since she’s almost completely dried up, it was more so just for comfort. He did pretty well overnight, although I didn’t get much sleep with him in bed with me. Early this morning I put him in with Duchess and her 3-week-old pups since they haven’t reached the rough play stage yet. Duchess accepted him immediately and is letting him nurse like he’s one of her puppies.

A huge thank you goes out to Anne Schmidt for helping to keep me level-headed during this ordeal. Maybe we can get those evaluations done on Thursday when there aren't so many people there while puppies are underfoot...🐾
