Important reminder

04/26/2023

It's porcupine season! 🏞️ Although our Urgent Care is equipped to see dogs for porcupine quill removals, we would rather help prevent them! No, porcupines don't shoot their quills at dogs. Instead, porcupines back into & swipe their tails at curious dogs who get too close, resulting in a muzzle full of quills.

If this does happen to your pup, please do NOT attempt to remove the quills yourself. You can push the quills deeper, break them and cause migration, miss a few, or get bitten by your dog. Bring your dog to an urgent care (or an ER if it’s after hours). Prevention: leash up in & around wooded areas from dusk to dawn when porcupines are most active!

Did you know drinking from puddles could be a health risk for your dog and potentially your family? Leptospirosis can be found in puddles contaminated with animal urine. We recommend vaccinating your dog against Leptospirosis annually if they have an active outdoor lifestyle with you.

Most cat owners don’t realize how easy it is for cats to have exposure to Lilies. Even if you keep them out of reach, just the pollen alone poses a big health risk to our feline friends.

Easter is just around the corner! With that, here is your reminder of the danger that lilies can bring to your feline family members.

Remember, your cat becomes exposed to lilies in various ways. From ingesting the leaves to having the pollen on their fur and then grooming as well as drinking the water the flowers sit in.

Ways to prevent this? When receiving or purchasing bouquets, make sure there are no lilies present!

TICKS!! They are coming soon. Now is the time to start your tick prevention if your pet is not on it year round. We have seen a dramatic increase this year in Tick Borne Diseases that we test for annually (Lyme/Anaplasma/Ehrlichia). Not sure which on is best for your pet? Give us a call!
