Happy Winter!
Winter here in Western Massachusetts has been mild so far, but we are expecting a cold snap this weekend. When it gets really cold and when the temperature shifts drastically and quickly, it is always good to be prepared with a few items on hand. When it gets so cold, horses tend not to want to drink as much. Adding electrolytes to their feed or water (as indicated on the package) is a great idea to prevent dehydration. Always make sure to have a regular bucket of water as well as electrolyte water just in case they don't like the electrolytes. Having warm water for horses to drink is also helpful. Making their meals into a warm mash is also a great way to get water into them. It is a great idea to have banamine and liquid antacid on hand in case of an injury or colic at any time but especially during a cold snap. Both items can be purchased at our office. If you have any questions or concerns about your animal this weekend or anytime, please don't hesitate to call our office at 413-549-6900. We have one of our vets on call 24/7. Stay healthy, safe and warm.
