If your valentine got you any lilies yesterday, please remove them from your home and contact your vet immediately. As a veterinary technician working at an emergency and critical care hospital, I saw firsthand how devastating lily toxicity can be. By the time you notice symptoms it’s often too late so even if you don’t think your cat had any contact, call your veterinarian for advice. Take care, everyone!

And when they get hurt, without a doubt, it’s ALWAYS on a weekend so you have to head to the emergency vet! There’s plenty of holiday dangers that can land your cat in the hospital, so make sure to keep an eye on gift ribbon, candles, chocolates, and poinsettias. Ribbon is the top holiday danger to cats, leading to abdominal surgery to remove it, so be careful! Have a safe and purrfect holiday season, friends!

Today is SPAY DAY for the undersocialized tortie twins I adopted. They came from a hoarding situation of over 50 cats. With hoarding situations, you often end up with litters of kittens born into overpopulated homes and they’re unable to receive the early kitten socialization they need with humans. So one of my torties is almost impossible to catch or put in a crate, the other is a bit more social but still timid. Fortunately for them, we do things LOW STRESS in this house! I put together the coziest little “den” they couldn’t resist and put it in their favorite elevated location where they feel safe (atop my armoire.) It’s cushy foam wrapped in a shawl, and I covered the carrier with a blanket so it was dark and inviting, but equally important so it didn’t look like a carrier! I removed the door and stashed it conveniently atop the carrier and loosened the bolt next to the door hinge so I could put the door back in easily without giving a scaredy cat a chance to escape! (Be sure to tighten this bolt once you’ve installed the door again though!!) I put it in their spot the day before, because my life is a little chaotic at the moment, but recommend introducing this a week in advance. Or even better yet, the very BEST thing you can do for your cat to make vet visits not so scary, is to make the carrier a permanent fixture in your home! Some people and homes can do this, others can’t, and that’s okay. We all do the best we can for our kitties. I hope this post gives you another tool to help you take the best care of your cat!
Purrs and head bonks,
Nic

Mother’s Day is tomorrow! Check out this awesome infographic put out by the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center! There are many beautiful options, and as a reminder, lilies are fatal to cats! Even a little bit of pollen on the fur that a cat may lick off of themselves can cause kidney failure, so it’s always the best practice to keep them out of the house all together in homes with cats.

I worked with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center a lot as a Registered Veterinary Technician working in an emergency hospital. They’re the very best resource when you’re wondering if something is pet-safe or not. I check with them every time before I bring home a new plant! I also highly encourage all of you to put their phone number and website on their fridge so they have it in case of emergency.

Celebrate safely, and I wish a happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there, whether you have human children, furry children, hairless children, feathered children, or scaled children!

I've been making progress here at home with the two undersocialized torties that were brought to the shelter from a hoarding situation. They're making steps towards acclimating to the busy household and we're so proud of them! I wanted to share with you all some tips and tricks to working with shy or otherwise undersocialized kitties!

Welcome to Cattitude Adjustment! My name is Nic and I'm a Registered Veterinary Technician and a Feline Behavior Consultant! I use both backgrounds to take a well-balanced and science-based approach to solving your most difficult feline behavioral issues. I can help you tackle issues such as inappropriate urination/defecation, cat on cat aggression, cat on human aggression, cat on dog aggression, introducing cats to new cats or other species, and more! I can help you prepare your cat for life with a new baby, help you create a home environment that is safe and comfortable for a cat with physical disabilities, and my very favorite and most rewarding cases I help with are helping scaredy cats feel more safe and secure in their home environment. That can mean a cat that was undersocialized as a kitten, a cat that became a stray for years, a cat who came from a hoarding situation, or just a cat who is naturally a bit skittish despite a happy and loving home their entire life. I love to see a scaredy cat flourish. If you have a problem I haven't mentioned, don't worry, I've probably seen it and helped before! I love to help cats and their people live happy and fulfilling lives. If you need assistance, please feel free to reach out in whichever method you prefer!
