February is Heart Month. Just like humans, pets can get heart disease too. The most common feline heart disease is Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A condition where the heart walls become thicker. The most common heart disease in dogs is mitral valve myxomatous degeneration. This is where the valve between the left upper and lower chambers is no longer functioning normally.

When purchasing pets this holiday season be sure to buy responsibly. This means checking that the breeders are performing appropriate pre-breeding tests based on the pets age and breed (which can include x-rays to assess joints, heart or eye exams with board certified specialists, and genetic tests), appropriate vaccinations of both mom and pups/kittens ( they are relying on antibodies from their dam to protect them until their own immune system is ready to start working so if she wasn’t vaccinated or boostered prior to breeding then they are not protected), and that the kiddos are not going to their new homes too young (generally you want them 8 weeks of age or older).

Check out ofa.org/chic-program/browse-by-breed/ to look for recommendations based on breed.

Browse through breed-specific health screenings. Contact us if you have any questions or need additional information.

With all the sweets and treats the holidays bring, be sure to keep them away from your furry family members. Eating these things can cause issues with vomiting, diarrhea, and even the pancreas. Let us know if your kiddos eat something they shouldn’t.

12/12/2024

We don’t treat them but today is National Day of the Horse!

12/09/2024

We hope you all have a great International Day of Veterinary Medicine!
