Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic We are a locally-owned, multi-doctor, small animal/exotic companion animal practice. Urgent care hours on most Saturdays and Sundays.

Our History:

Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic was established in 1990 by Dr. Susan Wagnon--a pillar of the sprint dog mushing community. In April of 2020, Dr. Wagnon transferred ownership of her clinic to Dr. Jamie Merrigan, one of her long-time associates. Dr. Merrigan has been with Ravenwood since 2013 and strives to keep the practice locally owned and operated, while continuing to uphold Ravenwood'

Hello wonderful Ravenwood clients. We had a rough weekend! Please be patient with us today. The clinic flooded and our computer system is currently down. We are able to take your calls but we do not yet know if we will be able to take any same day appointments today. If you have a scheduled appointment for wellness and vaccines, we can continue to see those appointments today. If you have a more complex medical case, it will be in your pet’s best interest to reschedule because we will not have access to your pets’ records until our computers are back up and running. We will let you know as soon as our system is back up. Our team worked tirelessly throughout the night to get the clinic back in working order. Our IT team will be on site later this morning to evaluate any damage to our system from the flooding. Again, thank you so much for your patience and understanding during this time. We hope all of our clients and their pets stayed safe this weekend.

April showers bring May’s open books! Moving forward Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic will be accepting new clients on a more permanent basis. If we begin to book out too far, we will again restrict the influx of new clients so that we can continue to take exceptional care of our current patients and clients.

They are making sure all of the sprint racing dogs are happy and healthy to race in the Open World Sled Dog Championship! Our Ravenwood crew will be out vetting today and tomorrow! Hope you are feeling that holiday spirit - we certainly are!

Christmas and New Years are quickly approaching which means fireworks, celebrations, and other anxiety-filled situations for your furry family members. Please check your pet’s medications and let us know if you need a refill, or if you are interested in getting some anti-anxiety medications (as long as your pet’s annual exam is current) please let us know as soon as possible .

Yesterday, we let all of you know that we closed early to celebrate the holidays with our staff. Thank you all for being so encouraging about us taking that time. Our team had such a wonderful evening in celebration.

As many of you likely already know a new respiratory illness in dogs is causing concern for pet parents. Currently, the actual infectious agent has not been identified, and no cases have been reported by our State Veterinarian (meaning that we haven’t had a case in Alaska that we know of). This illness starts with a cough and can rapidly progress to a severe case of pneumonia requiring intensive care treatment. Some dogs have died from this illness. Not every cough is an indicator of this illness, but a rapidly progressing cough or any difficulty breathing could be.

As universities and research centers race to identify the agent and effective treatment, the best course of action we have right now is prevention. Current recommendations are to make sure that your dog is fully vaccinated for kennel cough (aka bordetella, which is a yearly vaccine), and avoid bringing your dog to high-density dog areas like dog parks, pet stores, etc. If you are traveling with a pet outside of Alaska, be sure to follow these recommendations as well. Occasionally for a high risk patient that is traveling outside of Alaska, a canine influenza vaccine is recommended as well.

If you are wondering if your dog is current with their kennel cough vaccine, or would like to get an appointment to get a booster vaccination, please give us a call at 907-694-9665 to get scheduled! If your dog has a current exam on file with us (within 1 year), then we can get them scheduled as a technician appointment, otherwise an annual exam will be required.

Did you know that starting at 8 weeks of age puppies need to start their vaccination series. Vaccinations help to protect our furry family members from many contagious illnesses as they grow. Happy vet visits also promote socialization and positive memories of being at the vet. At Ravenwood, we use many different food distractions and positive reinforcement methods to make sure that our puppy friends always have a great experience at our facility with our staff.

Dear Ravenwood Pet Parents,

Due to inclement weather, and not wanting to place our staff or any of our dear clients and patients at risk, we have elected to close the clinic today November 9, 2023. If you had an appointment or surgery scheduled for today, we will be contacting you in the next 1-2 business days (either Friday 11/10 or Monday 11/13 ) to get you rescheduled.
