Routine physical exams are great for checking your pet’s heart, lungs, eyes, and ears, but what about their internal health?

Annual blood panels help us assess internal health including liver and kidney function, metabolic disease, and blood counts. Diagnostic tests provide valuable insight into changes in their health over time and allow us to identify illnesses early which can lead to faster treatment and often a better prognosis

💉 Schedule your pet’s wellness exam with us so we can run blood panels and help keep your pet healthy as can be!

With the holiday season in full effect, we know that there may be treats on your pet’s wish list. We also know that you are likely tired of the toothbrushing battle. Which is why we recommend dental treats!
Dental treats are a great way to reduce the severity of periodontal disease.

We urge our pet parents to look for the VOHC Seal of Acceptance and to avoid hard treats such as synthetic or natural bones.

The holiday season is now in full swing, which brings excitement, but for male cats, it can also bring extra stress—and with it, a higher risk of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD).

If your cat seems to be urinating more frequently, straining, or showing signs of discomfort, it could be a sign of FLUTD.

Simple steps like creating a quiet, cozy space or using pheromone sprays, can help reduce stress.

Our clinic is here to help! We can provide a thorough review of your cat’s health and offer guidance on environmental changes to keep them calm. Contact us today!

We are excited to share some bittersweet news.

After six years of dedicated service with us, Dr. Michael Sandstrom will be transitioning to a new role as the Managing Veterinarian at our sister clinic, Southside Animal Hospital and Wellness Center. While we are thrilled for Dr. Sandstrom as he embarks on this new chapter in his career and the continued care he will provide to their patients, we will certainly miss his presence and compassion. His last day at Alaska Veterinary Clinic will be Monday, December 30th.

If you have an upcoming appointment scheduled with Dr. Sandstrom, we will be reaching out to discuss your options and help you with any necessary adjustments to your pets care.

Should you wish to transfer your medical records to Southside Animal Hospital and Wellness Center, we are more than happy to assist you. Just let us know by sending an email to [email protected] or contacting our office at 907-277-3224.

Additionally, we would like to share that Maggie, a beloved member of our technician team, will be retiring at the end of this year. Maggie has been at Alaska Veterinary Clinic for over 10 years, and we will miss her greatly! Look out for her the next time you are at any of the state parks. She will be looking for dinosaur fossils!

We sincerely appreciate the trust you’ve placed in Dr. Sandstrom and in our team. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

🦠Leptospirosis is an infection of Lepto bacteria. Found in the urine of infected mice, rats, racoons, skunks and possums, this bacteria gets excreted into the environment.

Dogs are most often infected by drinking from a contaminated water source. The bacteria then targets the liver and kidneys, leading to serious illness and sometimes death.

You can prevent infection with an annual lepto vaccine and booster, good for dogs over 12 weeks old.

Help us spread awareness on the importance of the lepto vaccine by sharing this post!
