Each year the VCA Eagle River staff has a friendly competition where we divide into teams for our gingerbread house contest. There's three teams this year and the theme is "Wonders of the World". The only rule is that everything used must be edible. Voting is open for the whole month of December, so you can stop by and vote in person, or like the photo of the "house" you think is the best!

We're grateful you choose us to care for your cherished pets. We hope you have a safe and relaxing holiday!
Food is typically the star of the Thanksgiving show, with tables heavily laden with decadent dishes. The aromatic smells alone are likely to tempt your pet. However, many holiday menu items are dangerous for your furry pal. Thanksgiving foods that pets should avoid include:
• Bones — Bones of any kind
• Onions and garlic
• Chocolate
• Bread dough
• High-fat foods — rich sauces, turkey skin and buttery mashed potatoes, can lead to gastrointestinal upset in pets and may trigger pancreatitis, a life-threatening condition.
• Xylitol — This artificial sweetener, also sometimes called “birch sugar," is found in sugar-free desserts, gum and some peanut butter, and is highly toxic to pets. Ingesting xylitol can cause a pet's blood sugar to drop rapidly, leading to seizures, liver failure and possibly death.
• Grapes and raisins — Some stuffing recipes call for grapes or raisins, which can lead to kidney failure in dogs.

September is National Service Dog Month!. Even though September is almost over, Service or Guide dogs are life saving all year round!
Meet Ariel! She was trained through Guiding Eyes for the Blind. They provide guide dogs for people with vision loss.
Service dogs are incredible working dogs that provide life-saving assistance to people with disabilities. They also provide companionship and support. The bond between a service dog and their handler is a deep, mutual understanding that can foster a sense of independence and empowerment.

George says hi! He did great for his Cytopoint Injection!
Cytopoint is a long-acting injection that has been shown to be effective for the treatment of dogs against allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Your dog's immune system normally produces antibodies to target bacteria, viruses, and other causes of disease. The antibodies in Cytopoint are designed to target and neutralize one of the main proteins in your dog's body that causes itch. This helps reduce scratching, so the skin has a chance to heal. Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to see if Cytopoint could be helpful for your dog!

Kylie is VCA Eagle River's employee of the month! Kylie joined our team in October 2020 as a receptionist and became a medical assistant shortly after! She has a great work ethic and loves to help out wherever she's needed! Kylie has three dogs, two cats, and also loves "exotic" animals like ferrets and hedgehogs! We appreciate all of Kylie's hard work and positivity! Sadly, this month she'll be leaving our team to work closer to home and enjoy her new role as mom! Thank you, Kylie!
