What to do if your best buddy encounters a porcupine: Recently, we had eight dogs come in on one night after getting quilled by a porcupine. As the weather gets nicer and we’re getting out and about hiking with our pets, more animals are coming out as well.

Our friend Hank was out exploring the Alaskan wilderness with his mom when he had an unfortunate meeting with a porcupine. Here is a helpful list of what to do if your pet gets quilled:
πŸ¦” Take your pet to a vet, animal urgent care, or animal emergency clinic as soon as possible. Quills can move 1 millimeter per hour into the skin.
πŸ¦”To prevent further injury, limit your dog's movement and discourage them from touching the quills. Consider using an Elizabethan collar (cone of shame) to prevent contact with the quills.
πŸ¦” Do not cut the quills.
πŸ¦” It is important not to try to remove porcupine quills from your dog by yourself. Doing so can make it harder to find and remove the quills, and you may also risk injuring yourself. The removal of quills requires sedation and/or general anesthesia, and a veterinarian may have to cut into your dog's skin to locate and remove them. If quills are missed, they can migrate inside your dog, potentially causing infections or organ damage. In severe cases, migrating quills can be fatal if they move inward from the chest. Even if all visible quills are removed, undetected ones can still pose a risk.

πŸ¦” Dogs do not "learn their lesson" and often once they have encountered a porcupine, they will continue to pursue encounters with them.

We don't need an excuse to snuggle with our cats, but we'll gladly take one! Happy Hug Your Cat Day πŸ˜»πŸ€—

Meet the cats of PET Emergency Treatment that have us FELINE fine about this special holiday!

Boots is a 12-year-young handsome boy belonging to specialty LVT, Emily. Here he is pictured lounging on his thrown, showcasing his family crest above.

Jack, named after Captain Jack Sparrow, is a sweet 7-month-old boy with a mild case of Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a neurological disorder that affects mobility. He is learning to adapt to his new life with his mom Bradi, our specialty department veterinary assistant.

Lord Stanley is the founder of the "Stan Club." The club has very specific and strict entry procedures; if you do not abide, you are not admitted into the club. Once you're in the "Club," you have unlimited biscuit delivery and free access to communications with a mini panther. Lord Stanley's mom Madi, LVT, VTS in our Specialty Department says "He is very active and plays expert hide and go seek with his sister Laika, a Standard Poodle. Stanley is the most interesting bottle-baby panther you'd ever meet."

Sylvie is a 2-year-old kitty (who identifies as a dog) belonging to ER LVT Lauren. She was found as a stray in Meadow Lakes. She loves to hike, run with the dogs, and bask in the sun.

Louise was adopted by LVT, Training & Education Coordinator Jacqueline. She loves watching birds at the window and moose when they're in the yard. PET ER doctor Doctor Lavery saved Louise's life when she performed an emergency splenectomy a few years ago. Louise leads the charge every December in "Operation Destroy the Christmas Tree", succeeding every time! She is very opinionated about her world and is an expert biscuit maker, climber, and catnip lover. Louise is loved beyond measure.

Two of our ER Technicians, Ashley, and Lindsey, and their dogs Remy, Warner, Hook, and Siren, are helping us celebrate Rescue Dog Day today!

Ashley shared about Remy & Warner: "Remy Martin is a sweet pit bull from Ohio who loves everyone. He's the best older brother to a tiny human and is a great hiking partner. Warner Edwards was hit by a plow truck, resulting in a femur fracture. I helped amputate his leg and brought him home as a 'foster' which turned into a foster fail. Being a tripod doesn't slow him down. We go hiking, dock diving, running, and have started agility training."

Lindsey shared about Hook, a 4-year-old German Shepherd, and Siren, a 1.5-year-old Smooth Coat Border Collie. Both are "foster fails" and are now part of her family. They enjoy activities like hiking, sheep herding, and various dog sports. Lindsey spends all her free time with them.

We love a rescue dog ❀️. Post a pic in the comments to show us your favorite rescues!

Today is Chihuahua Appreciation DayπŸŽ‰ , and we are celebrating two sweet girls belonging to our ER Technician, Kerri.

Meet Jersey & Phoebe!

🐾 Jersey is a 12-year-old long-haired Chihuahua. She is a friendly, d***y, easy-going girl. Her favorite activities include lounging in the sun, exploring, smelling everything she can get her nose into, and licking. She’s never met a pillow she doesn’t like.

🐾 Phoebe is a 10-year-old short-haired Chihuahua. She was rescued from a drug house in South Florida when she was 5 days old. She is filled with the rage of 10,000 men and has Napoleon syndrome. Her best friend is her stuffed moose who she will play with for hours on end. Despite her size, she will tackle miles of wilderness terrain and loves to explore.

🐾 Friday, May 3rd was National Specially-abled Pets Day, and we want to celebrate some special pets that are a little different and unique. Meet Yuki, Eleanor, and Jake!

🐢 Yuki is a 10-month-old Double Merle Mini American Shepherd, who, due to her genetic makeup, is both deaf and visually impaired. Yuki's mom is our ER CSR Betty, who says that Yuki is an unstoppable, spunky puppy who has been learning American Sign Language (ASL) over the past six months. She is catching on quickly and already knows roughly 10 signs!

🐢 Eleanor is a 6-year-old Irish Wolfhound who was born deaf and knows ASL fluently. Eleanor's mom is our HD Vanessa, who says that Ms. Eleanor loves to run and has a very spunky personality.

🐢 Jake is one of our favorite patients! He is an 11-year-old Cocker Spaniel who developed antibiotic-resistant ear infections, which left few options for treatment other than a procedure involving the removal of the inner ear canal. Though Jake's recovery process was a little rough and he still has some side effects, he is loving life. His favorite things are Christmas lights, warm and cozy spots in the house, beef, and cuddles. You can often find Jake on adventures with his parents Melissa and Kenney, his four-legged siblings, or with the crew at Doggy Adventures.

Meet our friend, Wi******er!

Wi******er is a four-year-old, 149-pound Malamute who was brought to our hospital after showing signs of left thoracic limb lameness. Although the cause of the lameness was not found using standard digital radiographs, our office received a CT referral to investigate further. He was one of the largest and most handsome dogs we have ever scanned using our CT machine!

Brrrr.. it's cold! ❄️
We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that extremely cold temperatures can cause serious problems for pets such as hypothermia, accidental antifreeze ingestion, burns caused by fires or space heaters, and more.

🌟 HOLIDAY HAZARDS⚠🌟

They might look beautiful but holiday decorations may be hazardous for pets. Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe this holiday season:
πŸŽ„ Securely anchor and keep pets away from the tree. Also remember to sweep up any fallen brush or pine needles.
πŸ’‘ Hang strands of lights higher up. Not only can pets get tangled in strings, but these strands can give them a potentially life-threatening electrical shock if they bite through the wires.
🐈 Tinsel and ornaments can seem like toys (especially to cats) and can cause serious stomach issues if ingested. Avoid using tinsel when possible and stick with larger, shatterproof ornaments that aren’t easy to break or swallow.

Our furry family members can unexpectedly suffer from oral and dental diseases 🐢🐱 . The most commonly diagnosed clinical condition in pets is periodontal (gum) disease, which can cause bad breath, oral pain, loss of appetite, and other serious health issues.

Our veterinary dentist, Dr. Erich Rachwitz, provides periodontics services that include tooth scaling (cleaning) and polishing, closed root planing, guided tissue regeneration, and repositioning flaps.

If your family veterinarian recommends a veterinary dentist, oral surgeon, and/or advanced care from a dental specialist, our medical team can assist you in determining the best treatment plan for your pet.

Our experienced Urgent Care clinicians are highly qualified to provide out-patient care for pets that need to be treated immediately but are not experiencing an emergency. 11/30/2023

The veterinary industry is currently facing a nationwide shortage of veterinary professionals, which is having a significant impact on our teams. Due to a shortage of veterinarians and veterinary technicians, it is becoming increasingly challenging for veterinary hospitals to manage their patients, resulting in lengthy wait times. In Alaska, PET is the only pet ER that operates 24/7, as other veterinary hospitals have had to discontinue their round-the-clock services due to staffing issues.

To address this problem, we have launched PET Urgent Care for non-emergency cases such as minor wounds or bite marks, ingestion of minor foreign materials or toxins, occasional vomiting or diarrhea, and so on.

We are actively looking to hire several doctors and have been working on our recruitment efforts over the past year. Our commitment to providing quality healthcare to pets in our community remains unwavering, and we appreciate your continued support.
