Feeding Hungry Dogs - Thank you, Alaska Mill and Feed Inc.!
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Alaska Mill and Feed Inc. for donating altogether 2,000 pounds of dog and cat food! ARVO shipped this food to PAWS of Nome, as well as to Kotzebue and to Togiak, where Janessa runs a shelter and not only rescues the stray and unwanted dogs, but helps pet owners in any way she can. Thank you, Northern Air Cargo at https://www.facebook.com/northernaircargo and Dessert Air for donating the cargo shipments.
There are LOTS of hungry dogs throughout rural Alaska and we will a few more food drives, and will gladly accept any dog food donations so that we can keep feeding hungry dogs and cats throughout the winter months.

Are you a federal employee or retiree? As we approach Giving Tuesday (December 3rd), please consider supporting ARVO through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) using charity code 93087.

One of the great benefits of the CFC is that you can donate automatically through payroll deduction or through your retiree annuity, giving a little each pay period and supporting our mission all year long. Every little bit helps us to provide veterinary care and improve the lives of companion animals and their people in remote Alaska communities.

New to the CFC? Give it a try – just $5 per paycheck makes a big impact. It adds up when we give together!

Already donated? Consider increasing your recurring gift, adding a one-time gift, supplementing your pledge with volunteer hours, and/or sharing this message with your fellow federal employees and retirees so together we can help more animals!

GIVE HAPPY today at GiveCFC.org.

At our recent Yakutat clinic, we were able to provide:
63 - Wellness/vaccine appointments
4 - Sedated procedures
6 - Spays
5 - Neuters

We could not serve these communities without our sponsors, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Banfield Foundation, Petco Love, and individual donors. Further, we are always humbled by the local communities support, whether it be donations of food for the clinic team, donated lodging and facility for the clinic, volunteers who help to ensure the clinic runs smoothly, cash donations, and other tokens of appreciation.
For our Yakutat clinic, we are particularly grateful for the use of the Alaska Native Brotherhood/Sisterhood (ANB/ANS) hall, and a vehicle from Economy Auto Leasing. Melanie Gillardo, Meadow Mardis, Nicole Tierney, and Krista Mahan managed the registration desk as well as anything else that was asked of them. Special thanks to Stacy Halvorson, AC, Greg Indreland and Yakutat Seafoods for all the amazing food that kept the clinic team full and happy!

A heartfelt thank you to all who make our services possible!

That’s a wrap on our 2024 Yakutat clinic!
We are grateful for the community support, local volunteers, and all of our sponsors and donors who make these clinics possible.
Special thanks to grants from Banfield Foundation, Petco, and the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
And, of course, we could not do this work without our amazing volunteer team of veterinary professionals!

Update on one of the puppies from the Iliamna litter. This little guy, now named Zion, was adopted by a loving and adventurous family in Anchorage, where he is living his best life with plenty of snuggle/nap time as well as already getting out and exploring the area hiking trails (mostly being carried at this point).
His new family adores him!
We love these success stories!

As many of you are aware, ARVO’s founder and long-standing president Sally Clampitt retired from ARVO in January of this year, and deservedly so. Sally built ARVO up from its inception in 2011, freely giving of her time, compassion, and experience to fulfill ARVO’s mission to provide veterinary care to remote Alaska communities and reduce overpopulation/suffering of domestic dogs and cats.
As board members, we knew this day was coming. We also knew that Sally was leaving huge shoes to fill. When that time came, we rallied and decided that instead of trying to recruit a new president (we are all volunteers, as was Sally), we would take on the role of president on a rotating basis amongst us current board members. We were fortunate to have brought on Lori Kauffman, long standing ARVO volunteer veterinary technician, in a limited paid position to take on some of the administrative tasks that Sally had been responsible for. Lori has been a tremendous asset, not only addressing administrative tasks but also contributing her expertise to board discussions (in order for us to be eligible for many grants, we have kept Lori’s paid role separate from formal board membership), not to mention her continued contributions as part of our volunteer clinic teams.
Christine Witzmann, who has been with ARVO since 2012, first stepped up as president, with Susan Oehlers as vice-president. Christine brings a wealth of experience to the position. In May, Denise Abel, who has been with ARVO since 2014, took the reins, with Julia Harry as vice-president. Collectively, the current board brings 41 years of experience with ARVO to the table, and is working diligently to honor Sally’s legacy and continuing to grow ARVO’s reach. Sally continues to contribute to ARVO in an advisory role.

Healthier pets, people and communities

Too many puppies, not enough homes. Our mission is to provide veterinary care to rural communities, with an emphasis on spay-neuter surgery, vaccines, and education, to help reduce the overpopulation of homeless dogs, and the destruction of thousands of unwanted puppies and litters each year.
