Urgent: Rescue Organizations Needed!
We are hoping to rescue 3 dogs that are 5 months old, and 3 more dogs that are 9 months old. We are hoping to get Eva, Rex, and Albert out first. They can get on a flight on Sunday, December 8 if somebody can take them. Please let us know if you can take one of them, or both. They are not bonded, don't have to stay together. We just want them to come into safety!

Please let me know: who can take which dog, please?

Are you a federal employee or retiree? If you have not already signed up, please consider supporting ARVO through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) using charity code 93087.

One of the great benefits of the CFC is that you can donate automatically through payroll deduction or through your retiree annuity, giving a little each pay period and supporting our mission all year long. Every little bit helps us to provide veterinary care and improve the lives of companion animals and their people in remote Alaska communities.

New to the CFC? Give it a try – just $5 per paycheck makes a big impact. It adds up when we give together!

Already donated? Consider increasing your recurring gift, adding a one-time gift, supplementing your pledge with volunteer hours, and/or sharing this message with your fellow federal employees and retirees so together we can help more animals!

Not a federal employee? Share this post with others!

GIVE HAPPY this Giving Tuesday at GiveCFC.org.

ARVOs Helping Hand Program

While conducting veterinary clinics in remote communities is our main focus, we also provide a helping hand to rural dog owners in a variety of ways. Let me tell you a bit about some of our projects in 2024:

We bring dogs and puppies to Anchorage for rehoming, such as sweet old Lady: A dog lover called us from a rural village: A senior dog had been abandoned by her family and was found tied to a tree. No dog should ever be left behind tied to a tree, but especially not a sweet old dog such as Lady. The dog lover nursed her back to strength until we could arrange for a flight and bring her to Anchorage; one of our partner organizations provided veterinary care and boarding for her until she found a wonderful permanent home. After a rough life, it is heart-warming to know that she will spend her final years in a peaceful, loving home!

We also brought a crate full of cuteness to Anchorage: a litter of seven husky puppies! We placed (all but one, Zion) them in the loving hands of The August Fund, who found loving homes for them.

We also assist rural dog owners who have an injured dog but need logistical help to bring the dog to Anchorage for veterinary treatment, and often they also need financial support. One of these dogs was Pepsi, a dog that was injured in a remote village. His wound was getting badly infected, and he would not have survived if he had not received help in Anchorage. ARVOs founder, Sally Clampitt, personally arranged for flights to Anchorage for Pepsi, had him treated at Pet ER, fostered him until he was well enough to return to his family and then arranged for his return flight home. His family was overjoyed and grateful to receive our help to save Pepsi’s life – and we were happy to make that happen.

Now during the winter months, we are taking a break from conducting clinics – days are too short, and temperatures are too cold to travel to remote communities to provide surgeries. We conduct pet food drives and ship dog & cat food to rural villages: A large bag of dog food can cost $130 in a rural store, which is unaffordable for many rural dog owners. We also support the wonderful non-profit Straw for Dogs with their mission to send dog houses and straw to rural dogs. Rural dogs and cats are always on our minds and in our hearts.
Whatever project comes next – we will be ready to help, if we can.

As we approach Giving Tuesday, we are asking for your help.

Your support will help us continue to provide much needed veterinary services, food, and shelter to animals in remote Alaska communities.

On this day of thanks, we want to acknowledge our own board of directors and our Operations Manager Lori Kauffman. This small team is the heart of ARVO, volunteering countless hours carrying out ARVO’s mission.

We are also grateful to ARVO’s founder and former president, Sally Clampitt, whose vision made ARVO what it is today. We are honored to carry on her legacy.

Enjoy the photos of our team at work and enjoying time with their 4-legged family members (many of whom were adopted through ARVO or other rescues).

As always, thank you to all of our supporters!

The shorter days and coming of winter bring us to the completion of our 2024 rural clinics!

With your support in 2024, we have been able to provide veterinary services in 8 Alaska communities: Dillingham, Kotzebue, Manokotak, Togiak, Glennallen, Kokhanok, Yakutat and Nome. Families and pets also travelled to these locations from outlying villages to meet us for veterinary care. Our services have included dog and cat spays and neuters, wellness visits, and vaccines as well as laceration repairs, mass removals and treatment of urgent injuries. We completed over 170 surgeries and saw more than 500 total patients!

Thank you for the support that makes this possible. We are so fortunate to have dedicated veterinarians that continue to travel with us year after year as well as veterinarians coming on clinics with us for the 1st time. Our technicians and front desk staff are amazing as well in their willingness to go the extra mile again and again for rural Alaskan companion animals. Our supporters in all the places that we go make sure that we have everything we need while we are out, including local transportation, a clinic location, and a place to sleep and eat. We have been fortunate to receive generous donations from many Alaskan small businesses. We’ve had the opportunity in 2024 to partner with Friends of the Valdez Animal Shelter, Kenai Peninsula Animal Lovers and Paws of Nome to reach further and help more animals. THANK YOU ALL!

We are grateful for all of our donors, supporters, and grantors, including:

Feeding Hungry Dogs - Thank you, Alaska Mill and Feed Inc.!
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Alaska Mill and Feed Inc. for donating altogether 2,000 pounds of dog and cat food! ARVO shipped this food to PAWS of Nome, as well as to Kotzebue and to Togiak, where Janessa runs a shelter and not only rescues the stray and unwanted dogs, but helps pet owners in any way she can. Thank you, Northern Air Cargo at https://www.facebook.com/northernaircargo and Dessert Air for donating the cargo shipments.
There are LOTS of hungry dogs throughout rural Alaska and we will a few more food drives, and will gladly accept any dog food donations so that we can keep feeding hungry dogs and cats throughout the winter months.

At our recent Yakutat clinic, we were able to provide:
63 - Wellness/vaccine appointments
4 - Sedated procedures
6 - Spays
5 - Neuters

We could not serve these communities without our sponsors, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Banfield Foundation, Petco Love, and individual donors. Further, we are always humbled by the local communities support, whether it be donations of food for the clinic team, donated lodging and facility for the clinic, volunteers who help to ensure the clinic runs smoothly, cash donations, and other tokens of appreciation.
For our Yakutat clinic, we are particularly grateful for the use of the Alaska Native Brotherhood/Sisterhood (ANB/ANS) hall, and a vehicle from Economy Auto Leasing. Melanie Gillardo, Meadow Mardis, Nicole Tierney, and Krista Mahan managed the registration desk as well as anything else that was asked of them. Special thanks to Stacy Halvorson, AC, Greg Indreland and Yakutat Seafoods for all the amazing food that kept the clinic team full and happy!

A heartfelt thank you to all who make our services possible!

We are grateful to our amazing Yakutat clinic team, including our local registration desk volunteers.

Too many puppies, not enough homes. Our mission is to provide veterinary care to rural communities, with an emphasis on spay-neuter surgery, vaccines, and education, to help reduce the overpopulation of homeless dogs, and the destruction of thousands of unwanted puppies and litters each year.
