In my capacity as a dog trainer specializing in obedience and service dog training, I frequently encounter issues stemming from people and families bringing home puppies, whether through rescue or purchase, without sufficient consideration for their lifestyle. I strongly encourage prospective dog owners to engage in thorough research, factoring in their level of physical activity and home life. For instance, breeds such as the Rottweiler, which hail from hunting lines, necessitate regular exercise and mental stimulation. These dogs require engagement and purpose, which can be compromised if they are left at home all day. If you choose to work with a breeder, I recommend requesting their assistance in selecting a puppy that aligns with your family's exercise routine and home environment. Conversely, if you decide to adopt through a rescue organization, it is essential to observe the dog's behavior and body language to ensure compatibility. Puppies, in particular, demand more attention and interaction than older dogs. Therefore, selecting a dog that aligns with your lifestyle is crucial to prevent the dog from potentially being rehomed again in the future. Our ultimate goal is to provide dogs with a permanent home where they can thrive.
