On November 27, Shelter officers arrived to find Brooke, a Great Dane, unexpectedly giving birth to puppies. Tragically, Brooke was severely underweight—her ribs, backbone, and hip joints all painfully visible. No one even knew she was pregnant. As complications arose, it became clear she needed urgent veterinary care to help deliver her remaining pups.
Amid the challenges of the afternoon before Thanksgiving, Willows Veterinary Clinic came to the rescue. Dr. Sutfin and his incredible team, took x-rays and induced labor. Thanks to their efforts, two of Brooke’s puppies were safely delivered at the clinic. On the drive back north, the last puppy was born at 5:07 p.m. south of Anderson on I-5.
Brooke’s condition told the story of a difficult past. She is deaf, has a cherry eye, and an issue with her right eye, which will be addressed at Above and Beyond Animal Care on December 16th. She also suffered a broken right hind leg that wasn’t properly set, though it is healing well. Despite everything she’s endured, Brooke is an absolute rockstar—amazingly sweet, eager to snuggle!
Her journey to becoming a great mom has been inspiring. Initially, we were bottle-feeding the puppies, but Brooke is now nursing them while we supplement with bottles as needed. We have eight pups.
This rescue was a true team effort, and countless thanks are due to those who made it possible:
• Officer Tawnya and volunteer Chris for rescuing Brooke and her puppies, handling their transport to Willows, and saving their lives.
• Dr. Sutfin, and his crew Christine, Courtney, and Carina at Willows Veterinary Clinic for their exceptional care and compassion, sitting on the floor to rubbing Brooke’s ears while she was in labor.
• Chanda at Acana/Orijen for donating large bags of large breed puppy food for Brooke.
• Stuart at Dave’s Pet Food for providing all the canned food Brooke will need for the next month—this girl is currently enjoying two cans a day!

This story mirrors that of the ugly duckling, but it involves a dog. Due to unfortunate circumstances, we were contacted by Animal Control to take in a dog whose owner had been evicted. This sweet girl arrived in terrible condition, completely matted. Fortunately, Lily at Pawasome Salon took her in that very night and transformed her appearance.
Over the past few months, this lovely dog has truly blossomed. Her vibrant, happy-go-lucky personality has emerged, and her skin and coat have returned to a healthy state. We extend our gratitude to Above and Beyond Animal Care for their outstanding veterinary services!
