The Function of Dewclaws 101

Front dewclaws are typically removed by some at 3-5 days of age, because they are believed to be a non-functional digit that poses an unnecessary risk for being injured.

In standing, the front dewclaw may not appear to be functional because it doesn't come in contact with the ground. However, observing the dewclaw when the dog is in motion tells a different story.

Five tendons attach to the dewclaw and play an important role when the dog is in motion. For example:

-When a dog’s lead leg is on the ground during the gallop or canter, the dewclaw is on the ground to stabilize the carpus

-When a dog turns, the dewclaw digs into the ground to support the structures of the limb and prevent torque

If a dog does not have dewclaws, there is a higher potential for the carpal ligaments to stretch and tear which could result in laxity and arthritis over time (OUCH!). This can then result in more stress being generated through the dog's carpus, elbow, shoulder, and spine as it tries to compensate for the lack of digit.

On the other hand, the rear dewclaws do not have associated tendons and are considered non-functional (though they may be required for some breed standards to be present).

In speaking with many vets, you would be surprised at how few dewclaw injuries they see.

So- given the front dewclaws' functional use, why are we so quick to remove them?

In dogs, the most common injuries seen by many rehab providers and vets occur in the shoulder complex, yet we don’t see shoulders being removed. Food for thought!

Here are some cool videos if you'd like to learn more about the functional use of dewclaws in dogs:

Keep Walking! (When Introducing New Dogs) - The Other End of the Leash

Some good perspective... Not all dogs need to meet, and not all dogs have to be friends. 🐾

Introducing dogs can be great fun. There’s nothing like watching two dogs meet and begin playing to soften your heart and brighten your day. However, as we all know, that’s not always how it goes. Many dogs are uncomfortable when greeting an unfamiliar dog, including, as it turns out, our new gu...

AKC Rally

Way to go AKC! Here's yet another Virtual Title offering - yay!!

07/22/2020 – Announcing the Addition of Rally Intermediate to the AKC Rally® Virtual Program

The AKC Rally Department is excited to announce the expansion of the AKC Rally Virtual Program to include the Rally Intermediate class. Rally Intermediate is the next level of AKC Rally above the entry-level Rally Novice class. The Rally Virtual Program was announced three months ago and the positive response to it has been tremendous.
As with Rally Novice, the Rally Intermediate competitor sets up a pre-designed AKC Rally® course, records the team’s performance, and submits it to AKC. In turn, AKC will assign a pre-selected AKC Rally Judge to virtually review and score the team’s Rally performance.
Rally Intermediate is open to all dogs six months of age and older that have earned the Rally Novice (RN) title but have not earned an AKC Rally Advanced (RA) title.
There are five pre-designed courses published on the AKC website for the exhibitor to choose from. The exhibitor will setup the course according to the Instructions provided and with answers to the commonly asked questions in the FAQ document. They will video the performance, upload the video to their personal YouTube account, set the required YouTube viewing options, and submit the video link with the online entry form and pay the fee electronically to AKC.
Once the entry form is received, the video link will be assigned to a judge for review. All qualifying scores will be recorded on the dog’s AKC record and applied toward the three required for the Rally Intermediate (RI) title.
The virtual Rally program is planned to end at midnight December 31, 2020 and all video submissions must be received by that date and time. We are excited to offer this virtual option to our Rally Intermediate exhibitors!
For more information go to https://www.akc.org/sports/rally/rally-virtual-entry-pilot/
If you have questions after reviewing the information, please write to [email protected].
Wishing you lots of fun in your Rally runs!
Sincerely,
AKC Companion Events Team

Red and Howling

Even when you think the temperature is OK or feels fine to you, your fur kid may feel very differently. Animals don't sweat like humans, so they heat up a lot quicker than we do. Their primary source of cooling down is through panting which is wildly inefficient when exposed to too much heat!

The #1 cause of heatstroke in dogs is leaving them in a vehicle! Never-ever leave a dog in a car even on a mild day. While you're in the air-conditioned store grabbing a few things, your car is quickly turning into an oven. Dogs can suffer brain damage and die from heatstroke.

Helpful Tips: Walk in the early morning and late evening when it is cooler. Carry water with you. Limit exercise on hot days. Avoid surfaces that absorb heat, like asphalt, pavement, metal, sand, and car seats. These materials absorb heat from the sun and can stay hot for hours (even after the sun has gone down). Temperatures on these surfaces can exceed 145° F‼️

Keep your fur kids cool! Fans, ice cubes, frozen treats, kiddie pools, and sprinklers can all help keep the kids cool on hot days.

Make sure fresh water and a cool place to rest is available at all times. xo

How to Spot a Puppy Scam Online – American Kennel Club

There have recently been reports of Scammers stealing BRT photos and posing just such a scheme online. Buyer Beware!
Please be sure to research your breeder thoroughly. There are many reputable BRT breeders to choose from both here in the States and Overseas.

Yes! Check out those Virtual title opportunities! 🏆

The days of cancelled dog shows due to COVID-19 have led to several opportunities for virtual titling in various sports, including Rally. Virtual trials can have so many advantages, so this is a really exciting opportunity! Some dogs can't compete at normal dog shows, and this is a great way to show off their skills. For dogs that struggle with reactivity, or severe ring stress, or ones who find the dog show atmosphere too distracting or scary, the virtual titling program is perfect. Hygiene! It's not just for people...or would that be sanitation... Peeps, weigh in. And wash their bowls!

If you're refilling your pet's food and water bowls over and over without washing them, their bowls are filled with bacteria. As it builds up, the bacteria eventually contaminates their fresh food and water, which can contribute to dental disease or bacteria-borne illness.

To prevent the problem, wash your pet's food and water bowls *every* day in hot, soapy water, just like you do your own plates and cups. Use a cloth or sponge designated specifically for pet bowls, so you don’t accidentally transfer germs to the dishes you and your family use. At least once a week, place the bowls in the dishwasher to completely disinfect them.

If you don’t have a dishwasher, here are two alternatives:

Bleach: combine bleach and water at a 1:50 ratio (i.e., 1/3 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water) and allow the dish to soak for 10 minutes. Be sure to rinse the dishes thoroughly when you take them out of the bleach water.

Baking soda: combine baking soda, salt, and warm water in equal amounts to create a thick paste. Scrub the bowls with the paste and then rinse them clean.

All our dogs and puppies are microchipped and registered with AKC Reunite before they leave. Please be sure to update your contact information with them at least once a year.

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month! Make sure your pets are microchipped, enrolled in our 24/7 pet recovery service, and are wearing a visible collar and collar tag – so if they go missing and are found, they’re not mistaken as a stray!

ACT Virtual Program – American Kennel Club

**Correction- It's a Tunnel and an A Frame, not a Teeter. I misread the course map (because there isn't a key!)

AKC is now also offering the ACT1 Title as a Virtual Program. Yes, the courses DO require a tunnel and a teeter - but beyond that they are pretty simple and meant to be introductory to the sport.

https://www.akc.org/sports/agility/act-program/act-virtual-program

During this time of necessary social distancing, we want to provide those with dogs that are ready to test their agility skills a way to try the sport of ACT Agility locally. The AKC Agility ACT 1 Virtual pilot program will provide exhibitors an opportunity to stay-at-home or use their local trainin...

Okay puppy owners, why haven't I gotten one of these from one of you?! 😂
I imagine Melissa will scoff at it, then secretly make one for herself. Penny will find it adorable but Bear will make a bouquet (aka mess) of it. I bet Dreama is most likely to succeed on this one!
