The Akita is the largest of seven native Japanese dog breeds. The modern akita is actually a recreation of that breed, restored using a combination of many breeds. The original akitas were used for big game hunting and for guarding.

In 1932, Hachiko gained fame for the breed as the faithful dog that waited for his master at the train station every day for the rest of his life, unaware that the man had died at work.

Be wary of houseplants and be careful in the kitchen. Many substances that are fine for people are toxic to pets. Chocolate, xylitol, a sugar substitute found in chewing gum, candies and some peanut butter can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar even if ingested in a small amount. Coffee beans, grapes, onions, alcohol and macadamia nuts just to name a few are all toxic to pets. Keep medications in a safe place. Keep the phone number for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888)-426-4435 or another pet poison number in a visible spot.
