We have a very muddy duck yard. The ground is just goo. We were thinking we needed to get some pea gravel and build it up -but then we started a landscaping project in our front yard so we just started putting all the old trap rock out there for the birds😎. The rock has been a problem for us -full of weeds and dirt, but the birds will take care of that. I think this will be a good use of repurposing the rocks.😄

RIP “Dorothy 2”aka “hairdo hen” 2020-2024
She came to our house in November 2023 with a group of chickens that my sister Beth got from a patient at work. Now out of that group -only two remain.
After the dog drama yesterday, I knew our hen “Leghorn” was missing-but she showed up about 30 minutes later, and I let her in the pen to rejoin her friends and I thought everyone was back by 2 pm. Then later, around 5 PM I was leaving the garden and going in for dinner and I saw Dorothy too run out of the shrubs and head to the door for the chicken yard. I didn’t realize she was still out.😳 so I went to the door to let her in and she ran into the woods. 🙄 I just didn’t have the energy to chase her and figured I’d go out after dinner and maybe she would make a better choice this time. Well sadly, it looked like she went back by the door, but she was grabbed by the fox before anyone could let her back in. 😑 She usually was always off by herself anyway and that’s why I kind of forgot about her. The other chickens mostly stay in pairs or a group. She was more of a lone wolf, and that doesn’t always work out……

Do you know what I like? Gardening and watching ducks and chickens walk around the yard while I’m out working being supervised by Peter the cat.
What I don’t like, is unattended hunting dogs running into the yard scaring all the birds and grabbing ducks and chickens. And me having to run and scream like a crazy person and get the hose and spray the dog and check bodies . One chicken is missing, but the birds that were grabbed seem to be doing OK. Our dogs have their own fenced yard. Hopefully the missing chicken just ran into the woods and will come back later.

Today we welcome Claude! He was brought in to a rescue, lived with a foster family for over a year, and was adopted by them with us- but is going to live over here now🩷 he came with his own pen and belongings and his foster family can visit him anytime 🩷 We welcomed him with a strawberry salad 🍓🥰

Happy 8th birthday to Peter the cat!!
We picked him up from a farm after a rabbit show in 2017 because Elena said she needed a mouser to help her keep the new duck, chicken, rabbit area at our new place under control. She looked at all the feral cats, but the friendly cat that had been dumped there the year before came up to her and she fell in love with him. The farmer told her that she could take him because he practically trips them anytime they walk around the farm and they don’t know where he came from -just that he was a little over a year old. So Elena chose him/he chose her and we gave him her birthday so they could share 6-11. Over the years, he’s had half his teeth removed and suffered an eye injury last winter, but is still outside keeping track of everything😃 he’s a hard worker and a good supervisor 😎

We had a little change in flock numbers- Our boy duck Papi, was getting a bit too aggressive so Elena took care of him😏 and our friends had a chicken that was a bit too aggressive at their house -so she came to live here and see if she could get along with our flock. Her name is Blue and we welcome her ❤️so far 😆😏

Last night I found Violet the chicken passed away in the coop. No signs of distress, just maybe old age… this one makes us a bit sadder because Violet was about 8 years old and had survived all the ups and downs of the flock since she got here in December 2018 as a young two year old hen that Elena got for free off craigslist along with 5 others to add to her flock that winter. Violet, Shadow and Juanita are/were the oldest in the flock. We took so many pictures of her fluffy feet and fluffy butt over the years.- up until the end she pretty much looked the same-just a bit older. We will miss you, Violet. You were a good chicken.

RIP Lil Kim 2019-2024🦆
Back in May 2020 we lost every duck, except one, to a predator 😢 it was very sad and we went out and immediately bought Petals to be a friend to our surviving duck. Then Elena wanted Muskovy ducks again. She missed them and found a chocolate breeding pair on craigslist. So in early June 2020 we drove out to Wisconsin to buy these two ducks and when we got there the lady told us something happened to the chocolate drake so she gave us this black and white male duck instead. So June 7th 2020 we went home with our new Muscovy ducks- Kanye and Lil Kim. Over the years they had a few babies and we have several descendants still in our flock. But sadly yesterday Dan found Lil Kim passed away in the duck house . She was 5 years old. RIP lil Kim

We’ve had some gains and losses over the past week. We know it’s just part of farm life. Mostly we try not to get too attached, but there’s always the special ones🩷 this post isn’t about any of them😅 but a post to recognize the changes and happenings. In rabbits we lost little baby Licorice yesterday and Fiji, a jr. Doe last Friday. Plus she found 2 jrs. With deviated spines that had to go😞. On the plus side we got 2 three year old bunnies back, Cali had 8 babies 😃 Cali’s other litter, the black silver fox crosses are growing fast and Bayous 5 hollands are coming along as well 🩷
There have been no changes in chicken or duck numbers. Cindy duck still has mobility issues, but she keeps up with the other ducks and seems to be happy and taking care of herself, so we just let her be.

In March 2021 these adorable bunnies were born here, in May 2021 they went to their new home. Yesterday we got them back...

As a breeder Elena always takes her bunnies back if families change their minds- these two are so sweet🩷 not sure if they’ll be staying around or hopping on… but welcome back Blizzard and Ocean!! There’s a deer 🦌 in the garden! We sliced the fence in the winter to rescue a duck and the deer just found the hole yesterday -and they will not stop going in😂 The sunflower leaves are gone, Strawberry leaves are gone …so we fixed the fence tonight. This video is to show you all how loud one duck can be 🤣 Petals is 3 year old Pekin/anacona cross who quacks all day🙄😆 She’s the big white one. All the other ducks are Muscovys, and they don’t quack. In 2020 a predator got all of Elena’s ducks😭 except one hook bill, and Petals was the only duck we could find that was her age, to have a friend -but soon after …the Hookbill died. Then Elena decided her favorite ducks were Muscovy ducks and rebuilt her flock with all Muscovy’s, but we still had Petals🙃. She became friends with all the new ducks and just quacks all day.So obnoxious 🤣🤣 If a rooster isn’t crowing, Petals is quacking. It gets loud out there! 😂

I went in the duck house today and I saw an egg that had been stepped on ☹️ and it looked like a little body part was sticking out-so I picked it up gently and went to show Elena how close it had been to hatching -and she said it’s moving! It’s still alive!😲. So she got a damp paper towel, because it’s shell was pretty dried out, and she got it watered down a bit, and picked a few pieces off and then we watched it for a while, and out hatched a duck- all by himself ☺️(mostly) with a little help from Elena💗😊
