They don’t come any more stunning than this girl.

We transferred Coconut Cream and her litter of eight (!) kittens in from another shelter, where she’d been raising her rather enormous brood for a number of weeks in a fairly small space. We immediately got them set up in a loving foster home, and the kittens, then five weeks old, went bonkers over all the room they now had for their shenanigans.

We dubbed them the “pie group,” and her deliciously-named offspring will be available in about a week. Coconut Cream’s work as a mama is officially done, and we had her spayed yesterday. This sweet, friendly young adult (about a year and a half old) is ready for a home of her very own. She has been getting along nicely with the other cats in our cage-free Cat Lounge.

Before anyone asks: Her hearing is just fine. (White cats have a higher rate of deafness than other kitties due to a genetic trait related to their color.) She will need to live indoors, as white cats are easy targets for predators and more likely to get skin cancer.

Meet CC and our other “retired moms” at our Angels Camp adoption center, open Wednesday through Saturday from 11-5. 🧡🐾

We’re going to introduce you to some of our staff and volunteers in the coming weeks, because we have a really fabulous crew and we thought you’d like to learn about a few of them.

We’ll start with Bubba.

Our resident mascot and official greeter, Bubba is the one who’s truly in charge around here.

This dude loves the ladies. He always has a girlfriend. He yowls to be admitted into our cage-free Cat Lounge to spend time with his One True Love.

We’re always a little nervous when the object of his affection is adopted: “Oh, no, Bubba is going to be sooooo saaaad.”

Never the case. This himbo moves right on to the next one. He’s currently canoodling with Stormy, a beautiful grey/blue girl. When Stormy (who’s pretty fabulous, by the way — she’s the one who gave birth in one of our condos a few months ago and then raised her babies in a loving foster home) gets her own person or family, Bubba will find another 2gether 4ever gal pal. Dude doesn’t grieve, yo.

Primary duties: Soothing nervous and scared new arrivals; strutting past the dog suites (if he could talk, we’re sure he’d say he’s “just assisting with the personality assessments”), and eating. A lot. 🧡🐾

We just can’t EVEN with the ears on these two!

Puppies whose ears will eventually stand up go through some hilarious phases on the way to the final result. Coraline (female) and Caboose (male), age 12 weeks, are sporting ever-changing, super-wacky looks every moment of the day.

These chihuahua mixes, who will likely be in the 20-22 pound ballpark as adults, are exuberant, happy, playful, and ready to find their new homes.

Meet them at our Angels Camp adoption center, open Wednesday through Saturday from 11-5. As a reminder, we don’t place littermate puppies together. 🧡🐾

If a hunka hunka burnin’ love is what you seek, then 102-pound Cane is reporting for duty!

This absolutely spectacular Mastiff mix simply couldn’t be sweeter. He loves EVERYONE: grown-ups, kiddos, and other dogs are all on his list of Things I Simply Adore. Kittens in our lobby? A quick sniff, and then “Meh.” Not interested.

At just 2.5-3 years old, Cane might do a smidge more filling out (giant breeds mature slowly). More to hug!

Cane walks beautifully on a leash, so if you’re looking for a buddy to go on walks with, don’t let his size dissuade you. He’s a joy to stroll with!

As a bonus: Cane appears to be very much housetrained (though we cannot guarantee how he will do in a new environment).

As you can see, Cane certainly knows his way around a couch. He’s terrific company and is equally at home having a play session or cuddling with you in the living room.

Meet Cane at our Angels Camp adoption center, open Wednesday through Saturday from 11-5. 🧡🐾

AVAILABLE WEDNESDAY 8/14

One-year-old Lucy is what’s known as a mini Goldendoodle, meaning that one of her parents was a Golden Retriever and the other a miniature poodle. (Our money is on mom having been the Golden.) She weighs 25 pounds.

Lucy had an absolutely wonderful upbringing. She is outgoing and friendly, loves other dogs, adores kiddos, and even likes cats (!!!). She appears to be housetrained. She knows a few basics, like “sit” and “down,” and this smart cookie could easily learn a hundred more.

Goldendoodles require regular professional grooming, and Lucy was too much of a wigglebutt for us to trim the hair over her eyes. (We leave the tricky stuff to the pros when we can’t do things safely. We promise she can see.) Her coat is in lovely condition, just a bit longer than is ideal.

Lucy is spayed and ready to go directly home when adopted. She will be available beginning on Wednesday at our Angels Camp center.

We do adoptions on a first-come basis and are unable to take advance holds by phone, email, or Messenger. We’ll be open from 11-5 but you are welcome to arrive earlier and line up at our front door.

How early? That’s entirely up to you. Our gate will be closed until our first staffers arrive for the day. We’ve had folks line up outside the gate before, but we have no idea if that will be the case this time. Do what feels right to you. 🧡🐾

Don't forget: Those tear-your-heart-out TV commercials don't actually raise money to help pets in need in YOUR community.

At the Humane Society of the United States, less than one percent of money raised actually helps shelter animals.

The ASPCA, which is based in New York City, has raised more than $2 billion for animal welfare since 2008. In that time, it has spent about 7% of the total money raised in grants to smaller animal welfare groups. But during that same time period it spent nearly three times that, about $421 million, on fundraising.

We are an independent nonprofit and are not affiliated with these national agencies in any way.

When offering your kind support to pets in need, please be sure your generous donations are made where they can do the most good -- right where you live. Support your Calaveras Humane Society. 🧡🐾

We're so pleased with the super-enthusiastic reception to Friday’s announcement of our new dog and cat spay/neuter assistance vouchers! (Available from both us and our friends at Calaveras County Animal Services while funds last. Surgery discounts range from $125-$250 depending on the type and gender of the pet.)

A bit of clarification for everyone, based upon calls received in the last two days:

• Maximum of three vouchers per household at this time, until we see how funds hold up, so that more people will have an opportunity to utilize the program.

• Not for use by rescue groups or nonprofits. Personal pets only, please.

• The veterinary clinic you choose may require an appointment for a physical exam before they will do surgery, particularly if you are not an established client. You are responsible for this cost if they do.

• We contacted all veterinarians who participated in our previous voucher program (and that’s almost all the vets in three counties). If you are scheduling an appointment with a vet who is unfamiliar with our vouchers, you can ask their accounts receivable person or office manager to call us at 209-736-9417 for information on how the program works. (In a nutshell: We provide the voucher directly to the veterinary office. They discount your pet’s surgery. Then they bill us for reimbursement of the discounted amount.) It is up to them whether they wish to accept the voucher.

We will provide more info to you here as we go along, as folks bring us new and different questions. You can also visit this webpage for complete info on the voucher program:

Nine-month-old Lolly is still a little unsure after finding herself in our care just a short time ago. She warms up quickly with sweet talk and love.

She’s been watching the kittens being adopted like crazy, and she checks out every person who visits and wonders if maybe she’ll be chosen this time.

Lolly is a very petite five pounds with only a little more growing to do. She thoroughly enjoys the company of other cats. Did you know that only about 20% of orange tabbies are female?

Our Angels Camp adoption center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11-5. Yes, you’re absolutely welcome to adopt a kitten! They need good homes too. 🧡🐾

We teased you last month that we had BIG NEWS on the horizon, and here it is, y’all!

In collaboration with Calaveras County Animal Services, we have been awarded a major grant from California for All Animals (funding that was designated by our state’s governor for animal shelters, administered by the team at the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program).

This grant will provide dramatically increased assistance for low-income pet owners in Calaveras County who are struggling to afford spay/neuter for their dogs and cats.

Vouchers may be used at nearly any veterinary hospital for a discount on the procedure. Depending on what the veterinarian charges (prices vary from practice to practice), the voucher may cover the entire cost of surgery.

The new and improved assistance vouchers will provide the following discounts on spay/neuter surgery at participating veterinary hospitals:

• Female dogs: $250 off
• Male dogs: $175 off
• Female cats: $175 off
• Male cats: $125 off

And if that wasn’t already awesome enough, the vouchers will also provide $20 toward a rabies vaccine AND $25 toward a microchip.

Who qualifies? It’s simple! You must be a Calaveras County resident. (Once the funds are depleted, the vouchers will no longer be available, so we appreciate if folks who can comfortably afford surgery for their pets leave the vouchers for those with genuine need.)

How does it work? First, you must make an appointment for your pet’s surgery. (All veterinary hospitals in Calaveras County — and many in Amador County and Tuolumne County — participate, with the exception of Calaveras Veterinary Clinic in San Andreas.)

Once you’ve made an appointment, call us (209-736-9417) or Calaveras Animal Services (209-754-6509) to request your voucher. You can also stop by in person at either location during regular business hours. We will send the completed voucher directly to the vet’s office so they can take the discount from your bill.

Remember: Appointment first, then request a voucher.

The fine print:

• Any “leftover” funds (i.e., if the costs for surgery, rabies vaccine, and microchip are less than the voucher’s value) are NOT applicable toward any other services, or for a future date.

• Vouchers are not valid for feral cats or for use by nonprofits/rescues.

• Please allow a minimum of two weeks for us to issue your voucher.

We are so excited to be partnering with Calaveras Animal Services on this, and to be able to provide this much-needed assistance for our community. Teamwork makes the dream work! 🧡🐾

Now that’s what we call a glow-up!

Sweet little ragamuffin Odie arrived as a hot mess. (The first two photos were taken during his stray hold at the transferring shelter, Calaveras County Animal Services.)

His coat was beyond the scope of what we can tackle here, so we reached out to our friends at Town and Country Pet Resort. They were able to squeeze Odie in that very afternoon once they saw these pics.

Odie returned to us feeling (and looking) SO much better. He’s clean and fresh and ready to find his new person or family.

Odie weighs exactly 20 pounds, is about four years old, and has now been neutered. He’s a love bug (Town & Country called him a “sweetheart,” even for this very serious grooming). He’s been keeping his suite clean, so might be housetrained — though we cannot guarantee.

What is he? Likely a combo of the scruffy-fluffy non-shedding breeds (Yorkie, Maltese, etc.). He will require regular haircuts as his coat will continuously grow. Potential adopters should factor this ongoing expense into their budgets.

Meet Odie at our Angels Camp adoption center Wednesday through Saturday from 11-5. We are unable to take advance holds, and place our pets on a first-come basis. 🧡🐾a

We’ve had a nonstop stream (river? tsunami?) of kittens passing through our foster program this season. Fortunately, one of our most skilled “bottle baby” volunteers had just become available again when this group arrived late last week.

The feral mama cat had sadly been killed by a car, leaving five very young ones with an uncertain future. They are now safe and sound and being cared for around the clock thanks to this kindhearted volunteer — and your generous donations, which are covering formula, supplies, and future vaccines, spay/neuter surgery and much more, times five.

(Yes, there’s a fifth nugget at the bottom of this cuddle puddle.) 🧡🐾
