Niecy, a French bulldog ("Frenchie"), was probably not a cherished companion before coming into our care. The veterinarian who spayed her for us said that four-year-old Niecy had had "at least" five c-sections in her short life, likely churning out litter after litter for profit.

Those days are officially behind her!

Despite her background, Niecy is bubbly and engaging, just as you'd expect a Frenchie to be. She adores people.

She can be snarky with other dogs, particularly when she perceives that they've entered "her" space. This is quite common in the breed. She adjusted to living with her foster family's other dog, but she continued to be pushy. (In reality, her foster sibling adjusted to HER.) So if Niecy is to cohabit with other dogs, they need to be on the submissive side.

Niecy has been very observant when seeing Bubba, our resident cat, but has not done more than watch him.

Niecy needs to be on a prescription diet to prevent a recurrence of intestinal issues and diarrhea. We have had her vetted extensively. The average cost of this diet for her new person or family will be about $60/month (less if the food is ordered online). We will send her adopters home with enough food to get through the next few weeks, and you can either continue seeing the veterinary hospital we used or have her records transferred to your own vet.

This darling girl is housetrained, though we make no guarantees how any of our dogs will do in a new environment.

We do adoptions on a first-come basis, and cannot take holds by phone, email, or Messenger. Our Angels Camp adoption center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11-5. Niecy is available Friday. You are welcome to arrive early if you wish and line up at our front door. We're never sure whether we'll have multiple folks interested or not -- it's unpredictable. 🧡🐾

Let's make this spring and summer The Kitten Season That Wasn't, everyone.

Our area lags far behind other parts of our state in spay/neuter, and we have far too many kittens being born each year as a result. Our local shelters simply cannot handle the volume. Please be part of the solution and have your cats fixed now -- BEFORE they bring more kittens into the world.

Low-income Calaveras County residents can obtain a voucher from us or from our friends at Calaveras County Animal Services that will cover most or even all of the cost of having your pet cat fixed (prices vary by veterinary hospital).

Complete info on obtaining a voucher can be found on our website. Don't wait, as the vouchers are funded by a grant. Once the money’s gone, it’s gone. 🧡🐾

Pet safety alert!

Coyote mating season in California runs from January through mid-March. Coyotes take the dating game very seriously and will cover a lot of territory to find the right match. That territory may well include your neighborhood.

Male coyotes can become more aggressive during mating season.

Perhaps the most important precaution you can take to keep your dog safe? Spay or neuter. Coyotes are attracted to and can mate with unspayed or unneutered domestic dogs, and unspayed female dogs in season can attract male coyotes.

“I wanted to send an update on Brandi (adopted name: Brownie) as today is her one-year adoption anniversary.

“I did get her DNA tested. She truly is a ‘supermutt’ but the largest percentage (22%) is Walker Treeing Coonhound. Interestingly, they found no Labrador or Golden Retriever, nor any of the breeds her body type or demeanor would suggest…

“She is very energetic and active, which makes her a perfect companion to go on all the adventures with me. She even travels very well in the car and did a three-day drive to northern Montana with me. She is now capable of run-hikes up to 20 miles, snow adventures, paddle-boarding, boating, swimming, you name it.” 🧡🐾

Mom was a Golden Retriever. Dad was the neighbor's Rottweiler. An escape was made. The results were Dakota (female) and Doc (male), absolutely scrumptious nuggets who are eight weeks old and ready to start their new lives.

They're exceptionally sweet and friendly, and don't even get us started on the cuddles and the puppy breath.

They'll likely be somewhere in the ballpark of their parents' two breeds in size when they're all grown up.

Our adoptions include spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, a free "well check" at a participating veterinary hospital, and more. We adopt on a first-come basis and are unable to take holds via phone, email, or Messenger.

Did you know?

• Adoptions of animals aged three or more are half price for seniors 65+. (Valid ID required, please.)

• Low-income Calaveras County senior citizens may qualify for one-time assistance from us with a veterinary bill, thanks to a grant from the Calaveras Community Foundation. See this page for complete info: https://calaverashumane.org/services/senior-vet-assistance/

• Veterans may adopt an adult animal from us at no charge. Common Access/CAC Card, Retired Veteran’s ID Card, Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) or DD Form 214 should be available to show.

We love seniors and believe they’re among the best pet guardians out there. They have a lifetime of experience owning animals, and they often have plenty of time to spend with their beloved four-legged companions.

We had no history on this fella when we shared him with you Wednesday, so we were unsure how he’d do with da kittehs.

He has since met Bubba, our shelter ambassacat, on several occasions. Totally chill about it — it appears that having feline family members would be no big whoop.

Woo hoo! 🎉

We are honored to announce that we've been selected to receive a major grant from the ASPCA. We asked for funding to assist us with medical care of pets we take in who have pre-existing illnesses or injuries that will require extensive veterinary work, up to and including surgeries, to help them become healthy and ready for adoption.

The good folks at the ASPCA fully funded our request.

This means that for a period of one year, we will already know that we have the resources in hand to immediately say YES when a transferring shelter asks us to take a dog, puppy, cat, or kitten who needs that somethin' extra to get ready for a new life. We estimate we can welcome an average of 1-3 of these special cases per month. We can't even begin to tell you how excited we are.

Timmy, age five months, is a lovely heeler (cattle dog) mix. He’s full of energy and joy, and hasn’t yet met a toy he doesn’t absolutely adore. Check out that cheeky smile!

Timmy has a history of getting along well with other dogs. We have no knowledge of how he does with cats, but we can provide excellent info on doing good introductions.

We’re sure many of you remember sweet Huck, adopted in December. His family just sent us his DNA results. We LOVE when our adopters do this testing!

They added this info : “The Supermutt portion is Maltese, German Shepherd, border collie and rat terrier.”

Who knew this little dude has such a rich genetic tapestry? 🧡🐾
