Claire loves the Iowa State Fair and hasn’t missed one. She has grown up watching the Governor’s Charity Steer Show. She said it was a privilege to watch her dad judge the contest last year. Claire is excited to participate in such an amazing event for a great cause. Her favorite thing about the show is the traditions surrounding the steer show. It’s such an anticipated event and packs the pavilion. It’s an opportunity to introduce the public to the beef industry in a different light and allow ‘celebrities’ to take part in it. She said she takes great pride that the beef industry is a part of making a positive change in so many people’s lives through the support of Ronald McDonald Houses. Her family has been Iowa State fans for decades so she named her steer Magic to encapsulate the Hilton Magic Cyclone fans know and love. Claire has been showing cattle for nine years. She is a recent graduate of Atlantic High School and will be heading to Oklahoma State University this fall. She is the daughter of Brad and Kristy Pellett.

The IVMA and Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine will team up again this year for the Iowa Governor's Charity Steer Show at the 2024 Iowa State Fair. We are excited to introduce our steer owner, Claire Pellet of Atlantic and her steer "Magic". Dean Dan Grooms from ISU CVM will show Magic as our celebrity showman.

We're happy to report that Santa's reindeer have had their check-ups and got the green light from the AVMA President, Dr. Rena Carlson to fly on Christmas Eve!

In a joyful announcement for children and animal lovers alike, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has declared that Santa's reindeer are healthy and all clear for their magical Christmas Eve journey.

The Heck Infirmary at Living History Farms is one of the IVMA’s favorite ways to give back to the community. We are proud to keep the building in good shape for visitors to learn about the history of veterinary medicine.

Today is International Day of Veterinary Medicine. Our veterinarian in Walnut Hill would have attended mostly to large livestock and spent his time making “house calls” to farming clients. He would have left the clinic open, allowing farmers to leave a note or wait. (A cage separated the pharmacy from the waiting room.) Veterinary licenses were not required until the start of the 20th century, but early veterinarians were pioneers in disease theory and surgery.
