Summer is heating up to be an exciting season! While it can be fun to bring out furry friends on outdoor adventures with us, we have o make sure we take the proper precautions to make sure we keep them safe. Earlier this month, we talked about some general pet safety tips. Today, let's take a closer look at how to keep your pet hydrated while out and about in the summer sun.
First, always have a separate bottle of water and a clean travel bowl available for your pet. We don't want them drinking water from puddles, ponds, lakes, or streams because this can expose them to potential illness causing microbes.
Second, monitor their attitude! If they seem to be getting tired, take a break in the shade and off them some water. In general, they should drink about an ounce of water daily for each pound of body weight. For example, a 10 lb. dog would drink an average of 10 fl oz of water daily. If they're being very active, this will likely increase some.
Third, always monitor for those more serious signs of dehydration/overheating we talked about earlier this month and seek veterinary care when appropriate!

Good morning from Molly!
With the hot weather it is important to remember that it may be too hot for your dog to go on long walks/runs. Try some indoor activities to get their energy out or do a short walk around the block in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are a little cooler. It is also important to remember that if the pavement is too hot for the the palm of your hand it is way too hot for their paw pads! Try to follow these guidelines to prevent heat stroke and burns on their paw pads! Your dog will thank you!

BUT! F***l screenings are an important step in protecting your pet. F***l antigen testing helps us find intestinal parasite infections that other types of testing may miss.

Bring a sample to your pet's next visit and ask us about year-round parasite preventatives!

Not to start your day on a scary note, but let's talk about lumps and bumps. While some masses do not cause any harm, others can wreak havoc on our furry friends' bodies. Many of our patients get a Needle Aspirate sample of their masses and we have found abnormal cells at their annual exam. Some of these masses are very small, but if it had not been caught, it could have caused some big problems for these patients. Some of these cytology's reveal a cellular composition indicative of a Mast Cell Tumor. While Mast Cells normally work with the pet's immune system to protect the body from foreign material and pathogens, they can replicate too much too quickly and become mutated in the process, leading to unregulated cell division (growth of masses). Cellular masses like this are dangerous for the body and should be removed surgically as soon as possible (if appropriate). By bringing your pet to the veterinarian regularly, you can help us catch these lumps and bumps when they are small to determine if they are worrisome or simply cosmetic while we still have lots of options for care. For more information, visit veterinary partner's article o Mast Cell Tumors here:

Most mast cell tumors arise in the skin but technically they can arise anywhere that mast cells are found. Mast cell tumors are notoriously invasive and difficult to treat.

🌞 As The Weather Starts Warming Up, Pet Preparedness Month Starts Warming Up, Too! 🌞

Here are a few safety tips to get you started:
~ Your pet should always have access to cool, fresh water. Never let the bowl run dry!
~ Never leave your furry friends unattended in the car on a warm day, the temperature rises faster than you'd expect!
~ When it comes to walks, be sure the ground is coo enough for your pet by placing your hand on the pavement and counting to 10 or 15. If you cannot do so comfortably, it is too hot for your pet to walk on the pavement.
~ Signs of overheating include excessive panting, lethargy, disorientation, sweaty paws, dark red gums, shade-seeking, excessive thirst, rapid heart rate, and drooling. If you see any of these signs, place cool wet towels on your pet, offer them water, wet their paws, and take them to a veterinarian immediately.

True or False?
Indoor cats do not need monthly prevention.

FALSE
Indoor cats need monthly Heartworm, Flea, and Tick prevention! This prevents flea infestations as fleas can still find a way in the home, especially on some of the fellow canine housemates. Mosquitoes always find a way in the home and they can give your cat Heartworm. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for cats that test positive for Heartworm Disease and a lot of the time this can be fatal. For these reasons prevention is always the best!

Our veterinarians recommend Revolution Plus and Nexgard Combo!
Check out our online pharmacy and the rebates available to get your cats started on their prevention!

Does Your Feline Friend Need Your Help?

Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects many cats as they age. As cartilage wears down, the joints become rough, and the bones do not glide past one another as smoothly as they used to. The cartilage is there to cushion the bones and support the joint capsule to allow for comfortable and chaotic feline play. If you'd noticed that your cat does not seem to enjoy climbing up the at tree, jumping on the counters, grooming themselves properly, or using the stairs as much as they used to, schedule an orthopedic exam with one of our veterinarians to see if Solensia is right for your pet!

Not sure? Fill out the OA checklist and bring any questions you have with you to your appointment!

Use this checklist to see if your cat may be showing signs of osteoarthritis.
