A big question we get around here is: "Can I just pick up some antibiotics?" and the answer is typically no - we have to do a cytology!
What is cytology? Cytology is the microscopic examination of cells that have been collected from the body. This tells us if the issue is being caused by inflammation from bacteria(s), fungi, parasites, etc. or being caused by abnormal cell growth. Each of these things are treated differently, so it's important that testing is done to be sure your pet is receiving the proper treatment. Let us take a closer look into what's going on with your pet, by taking a peek under the microscope! This will help us make sure they are receiving the best care possible!

Fun Fact: Did you know that the microscope was invented in 1590? However the first cytological examinations were performed in 1838.

We hope everyone has been having a splash this summer! Just some quick tips on water safety with your pet when going swimming. -Never leave your pet unsupervised when swimming, and be sure they have been slowly introduced to water/swimming before diving right in.
-Try getting a kiddie pool to start acclimating them, and make sure they know where the clear entrance/exit to the water is when working up the larger bodies/pools.
-Have life jackets, or durable floats available, even for the strongest of swimmers.
-Discourage drinking of pool, or beach water and always have access to fresh drinking water.

“Kennel Cough” can be caused by a number of different canine infectious respiratory diseases. Bordetella bronchiseptica or Bordetella is one that you might hear us talk about a lot during your pet’s annual exam. What is it, and when should you consider vaccinating your dog? This bacterial disease can be transmitted through direct dog-to-dog contact, air particles when coughing/sneezing, or even contaminated items such as clothing, toys, or door handles. The incubation period for many canine infectious respiratory diseases can be 2-10 days.
If you walk your dog where others may have gone, visit friends/family with dogs, or have dogs at your property line - you may want to discuss vaccination with your veterinarian. Most boarding facilities and daycares will require this vaccine every 6 months - year. To learn more about Bordetella and vaccination check out this document!

July 4th is next week and you know what that means! Family BBQs, loud parades, and FIREWORKS! Remember to keep these key tips in mind when it comes to these types of stressful events with your pets: Call in their calming/anxiety medications NOW if needed, keep your pet indoors, and only go outside leashed and supervised. Make sure their collars are fitted properly, and tags and Microchip information are up to date! You can even play sound makers, or relaxing music to help drown out the noise. Have fun, stay safe, and have a happy fourth!

Most of us know the precautions to take when taking out our cats and dogs during the summer heat. But what about our exotic pets like reptiles, birds, and small mammals? On days where the temperature exceeds 80 degrees it's best to keep small mammals like guinea pigs, rabbits, and chinchillas indoors. Other pets like birds (depending on the species) are typically found to be native to places with average temperatures around 85 degrees. Many reptiles have a basking temperature of between 90-100 degrees depending on the species, and can benefit from sunlight exposure during the summer.
Check out the article below to learn more about how to safely expose your exotic pet to the summer months!
