As spring progresses, the yellow buckeyes along Buckeye Drive on Hains Point are blossoming. Thriving in full sun, buckeyes get their name from their distinctive brown and white seeds that some think look like deer eyes. (Please don't eat the raw nuts, they are poisonous.) Birds and butterflies enjoy resting on their branches in the shade and the spring blooming produces lovely clusters of colorful blossoms. One more fun fact, before better materials were developed, people often used the wood from yellow buckeyes to make artificial limbs because of its light weight and resistance to splitting.

What happens to Park Rangers when it’s raining? – They get wet just like everyone else.

Not even Rangers are impervious to rain. But, we never said they don’t go out and play on a rainy day! Some of the most magical days in the Park happen when fog envelops the vibrant greens of spring; sounds of raindrops fall through the canopy like a pinball machine; and birds sing their songs from across camouflaged hideaways.

Image: A visitor in a red rain jacket stands in on the Stony Man Trail, surrounded by a lush green canopy on a wet, foggy day.
