Unfortunately for our wonderful staff and our devastated island community, hurricanes are expensive and take time to recover from. (2 Category 3 hurricanes in 10 days is just unthinkable!) If you're going to the island, whether by boat or if they open things back up later today,
BEWARE!!!
-Everything is dirty
-Everything is moldy
-Everything is rusty
-There is no water to wash your hands or drink
-There is no place to relieve yourself
THEREFORE:
-Flip flops may not be the best option! Break out those sneakers! -Bring a change of clothes! You'll thank me for this later.
-BRING WATER. Some to drink, and enough to wash your hands.
-Bring a flashlight/batteries. Your cell phone flashlight wont last.
DO NOT:
-Bring your pets. You'll be watching every step YOU make, you will NOT be able to keep track of every step you BOTH make.
-Eat food without somehow cleaning your hands. Diarrhea is not your friend.
-Become a liability! The 1st responders working out there already have enough to do!

Doing my damndest to post to local pages and forums and set realistic expectations for response. The island has never seen this kind of a disaster, even though it wasn’t a direct hit. This was a water event, not nearly as much of a wind event, thankfully.
Any single story houses are flooded. Any parked cars are flooded. Gulf Blvd., which runs the length of the gulf side of the island is under several feet of sand.

There were fires, trapped people, and probably injuries. But this was a minor swipe in the grand scheme of a cat 4 hurricane, and will hopefully serve as a wake up call for the island. Don't get me wrong. It's bad. But certainly not as bad as it could have been.

Also notice that the buildings are intact! That's great news!

When your dog kicks his oversized dog bed and blanket to the curb and lays on the guest room bed, in the sun, on a pillow, to eat his Tucker's Raw Frozen Beef Bones. He thinks he's got money in the bank. Poor guy...not telling him we're having leftovers tonight. (Again.)

We have Tucker's frozen bones in 5 different sizes, from 2" to 6". We recommend making sure the bone is at least as long as your dog's snout to reduce the risk of accidental ingestion.

As always, make sure you supervise your dog with any bone, and take it away after the marrow and meat are cleaned off...you don't want him to chip a tooth just chewing on the hard bone. Come on by!

POV: When you have to send the giant manatee stuffie through the wash (again) after your SIL sees his head sticking out of the kitty litter box. According to the 2 yr old in the house, "Manatee had to go pottie".

That logic is spot on, little girl.

Oh, and we carry World's Best Cat Litter (unscented) in the store for all your manatee potty training needs. Come by!

Please make sure you have your pet's hurricane supplies ready!

Here's what you should have in your pet kit:
Food for several days
Water
Medications
Calming agents (CBD, Woof/Kong toys for licking (stress relief)
Bully sticks or other non-rawhide chew to keep their minds busy
Leash
Collar
A copy of vet records/vaccinations in case you need to go to a shelter and they require proof of vaccination
Crate
Favorite bed/blanket
Food/water bowl
Toys to keep them busy

Having responded to multiple Cat 3+ hurricanes with FEMA, I can tell you that the barometric low associated with hurricanes is much lower (more intense) than that of a regular storm. Since dogs sense that drop in pressure, even non-storm phobic dogs may have a hard time. Make sure you take your dogs into consideration when packing your kit!

Had an actual reenactment of this when MLB rockstar Clint Hurdle dropped his lovely daughter Maddie off for work this morning. He said there was video of him "dugout dancing" to the song I had on in the store. Of course I found it, and am posting it here for your viewing pleasure. Courtesy of Grand Funk Railroad, I give you the pure joy of the multi-talented legend himself. (Be advised if you have young, impressionable children.)

So, it’s not just me….

On my way to work coming over the bridge this morning, I saw a convertible coming from the other direction with what looked like a large piece of furniture sticking up from the back seat, rising up over the driver's head. As it got closer, it moved and came to a rest on the top of the windshield.

It was not furniture. It was a Doberman. He got tired of holding up his big pumpkin head in the wind and laid it down on top of the windshield to rest.
