Heel bulb lacerations can be very serious and hard to heal up. We recently had one come in that was very contaminated but appeared to only involve the skin, coronary band, and hoof wall. The tendons, joints, and arteries seem to have been spared. After 2-3 wet to dry bandages to debride the wound, the foot cast was applied and left on for 3 weeks. The wound was stable and healing well at 3 weeks and a second cast was applied and left on for another 3 weeks. The wound healed remarkably well. A foot cast eliminates the need for bandage changes, eliminates motion in the skin edges, and is a very effective way to handle these kinds of lacerations.

We have seen an abnormally high number of colics this week. Colic is a belly ache in a horse and can be caused by a number of conditions such as an impaction, gas or a twisted or displaced intestine. Some can be managed with pain medication and mineral oil but others require surgery to save their life.
The success of colic surgery has improved greatly in the past 40 years. It can cost upwards of $10,000 and requires transport to a referral center such as the Ohio State University. You must decide ahead of time if surgery is something you wish to pursue if the situation arises and come up with a plan to get the horse transported to the surgical facility.
If you own a truck and trailer make sure the tires are properly inflated, there is fuel in the truck and the lights are all working properly. These emergency situations come up unexpectedly and on top of that at night so be prepared.
If you do not own a truck and trailer and have decided that referral and surgery are an option then formulate a plan with a friend or neighbor to get your horse transported. You should have a couple options.
Time is of the essence! With these cases and a delay in getting them on the surgery table it could be the difference between life and death. Bottom line is to be prepared!

The hot humid days of summer is the time when we see Potomac Horse Fever (PHF). Horses typically start out being off feed with a low grade fever. Diarrhea usually develops within 2-3 days. If treated early with a specific antibiotic treatment is usually successful. If treatment is delayed and diarrhea develops laminitis is likely to occur.
In places that have been a problem in the past I include PHF vaccine in the yearly shots. Even though the vaccine does not instill perfect immunity it does decrease the severity of the disease if the horse gets it.
If you have questions about your horse’s vaccination states or for an appointment call us at 937-492-2451.
