The B Pack Training is proud to announce that I am now offering private lessons. I want to thank everyone for being patient with me while I moved and settled in to my new home over the past few months. I am excited to start helping the dog owners of Sevier County again! I now have an indoor space available to use for consultations and training, as well as space outdoors in a quiet town to work with dogs and their owners.

At this time I will only be offering one on one private training, which means you will be present for all training and handling of your dogs. As a trainer, I believe it is crucial for owners to be actively involved in their dog's training. The B Pack Training uses balanced methods when working with dogs. This means I use both positive training methods, and aversive training methods. I believe it is extremely important to use whatever methods seem to work best for the dog in front of me.

I will be doing things a little differently this time around. Owners will need to sign up for a minimum of 4 training sessions, these can be paid upfront or individually. With at least 4 sessions, we will be able to hit the most important aspects of the needs your dog has. If we need to extend out to more sessions we can do that as well. Sessions will be held once a week (most often on weekends and evenings). Each session will be around one hour long. Please know that most of that will be spent discussing and not hands-on with the dog this is to ensure we do not overwork and tireout your dog too much. Dogs must be brought in on a 4-6ft leash; please no retractable leashes, chain leashes, or long leads. A well as on a properly fitted collar or harness. Each session will be $25, or if you pay in full for all 4 sessions $90 (you save $10).

The first 4 sessions will include:

1. Consultation: I will sit down with you and your dog to chat about issues you are having in home life, routine, diet, etc. In this session, we will not do any (or very little) work with your dog but I will send you home with some possible changes to implement in the home.

2. The Basics: We will work on the basics with you and your dog, making sure you have an understanding of the best way to teach and reword behaviors. This includes but is not limited to sit, down, stay, leash work, recall, etc.

3. Deep Dive: We will dive into the major issues you and your dog are having in the home. Implement specific programs and games geared towards the specific needs of you and your dog.

4. Final Touches: We will work on anything you and your dog may be struggling with, and ensure you are confident in everything you have been taught throughout our sessions.

After each session, you will be sent an email going over what we discussed during the session, and links to anything I referenced. You will also be added to my Facebook group where you can post questions and videos as well as connect with other clients and their pups. And you will be able to reach me at my time with questions via the group, facebook, call, or text.

I have owned dogs my entire life and been obsessed with training since I was a child. I've devoted so much to learning and better educating myself on dogs and dog behavior. From Tv shows to books, podcasts, and hours of videos. I never take on cases outside my skill level. Due to this, I will not be working with dogs who have any kind of reactivity or aggression issues. If you are struggling with this with your dog I can point you in the right direction.

Specialty training like trick training, service dog training, etc. will be a little different please inquire as needed.

Long informative post concluded, I am beyond excited to meet you and your dog! To apply for training please fill out an application linked below. Please provide as much information as possible to this application.

Playing "Gotcha" with Sprout.

02/07/2021
02/01/2021

I played a bit if It's Your Choice with Sprout today and his mom asked if she could take a video. Of course i said yes!

It's Your Choice is a game of impulse control. It starts with you holding a treat in your hand and only rewarding when you puppy(or dog) leaves it alone and can be moved up to eventually leaving your dog alone with a treat while you leave the room. The only verbal marker or command that should be given is Yes for the correct behavior. It's Your Choice is a waiting game which means you never tell the puppy no, or leave it.

Here you can see me going through steps 1-3 with Sprout. I would like to note that he had already moved up to step 3 before we took the video. Some puppies may need to stay on step 1 for multiple sessions. Go at the pace that is best for your pup. Sprout is a smart little man who picked up in it quickly.

This game can be played with your puppies kibble, treats, or something high value like chicken. This game should be played in an area where no other aniamls can steal the treats, as this game creates frustration and you don't want to cause any guarding issues. Keep sessions either puppies short to not over tire them ad this game takes a lot of brain power. Puppies should probably take a nap afterwords also :)

Sometimes people underestimate the abilities of little dogs. I have met many people who have said little dogs can't be taught anything. Little Sprout the Cavapoo disagrees with this statement. How cute is he?

01/22/2021

Have a litter of puppies? Want to ensure the home you pick is the right fir for them? The Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test is done with puppies on day 49 (7 weeks of age). At this age puppies, temperaments are the closest they will be as an adult. The test is done at a location where the puppies have never been, with a tester they have never met. The PAT consists of 10 different tests that will offer insight about each puppy's temperament and personality. Many breeders add this test to their program to ensure they match the right puppy to the right homes, and to ensure puppies who need an extra boost in life are given that.

Pros:
• gives an objective, non-biased, standard view of a puppies temperament
• shows weaknesses in the breeder's socialization program to help strengthen those areas
• shows individual puppy's weaknesses to focus on
• allows the breeder to best assess types of homes each puppy would be suited for.
• Helps determine if a puppy would make a good Service, Therapy, or working prospect.
Important things to note about testing, tests should be done when puppies are at their most active, have not eaten recently, when they are ill, or if they have had vaccines within the past several days. The test should be done the exact day that puppies turn 7 weeks old. No later no earlier. This will give the best results for the test.

My tests are $5 per puppy and $1 per minute. Ie a litter of 6 puppies that taked 30min to evaluate will be $60. Once the test is done you will receive the score sheet for each puppy that you can keep on hand and give to their forever homes. I will also note any major structural issues I notice with the pups so that can be watched as they grow. I also do a Facebook live video of the test so that you and/or the puppy buyer can look back at it at a later time. I do require that puppies are brought to me unless the breeder is open to paying additional travel expenses.
Here is a link showing the score sheet, how the tests are done, and what each score means:

A Letter on Puppy Socialization from Dr. R.K. Anderson, DVM, Diplomat, American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and Diplomat of American College of Veterinary BehavioristsTO: My Colleagues in Veterinary Medicine:Common questions I receive from puppy owners, dog trainers and veterinarians concern: 1) what is the most favorable age or period of time when puppies learn best? 2) what are the health implications of my advice that veterinarians and trainers should offer socialization programs for puppies starting at 8 to 9 weeks of age.Puppies begin learning at birth and their brains appear to be particularly responsive to learning and retaining experiences that are encountered during the rst 13 to 16 weeks after birth [Dr. Anderson is saying that the prime time for puppy socialization stops somewhere between 13 and 16 weeks, although more socialization occurs after that time]. This means that breeders, new puppy owners, veterinarians, trainers and behaviorists have a responsibility to assist in providing these learning/socialization experiences with other puppies/dogs, with children/adults and with various environmental situations during this optimal period from birth to 16 weeks. Many veterinarians are making this early socialization and learning program part of a total wellness plan for breeders and new owners of puppies during the rst 16 weeks of a puppy’s life -- the rst 7-8 weeks with the breeder and the next 8 weeks with the new owners. This socialization program should enroll puppies from 8 to 12 weeks of age as a key part of any preventive medicine program to improve the bond between pets and their people and keep dogs as valued members of the family for 12 to 18 years. To take full advantage of this early special learning period, many veterinarians recommend that new owners take their puppies to puppy socialization classes, beginning at 8 to 9 weeks of age. At this age they should have (and can be required to have) received a minimum of their rst series of vaccines for protection against infectious diseases. This provides the basis for increasing immunity by further repeated exposure to these antigens either through natural exposure in small doses or arti cial exposure with vaccines during the next 8 to 12 weeks. In addition the owner and people offering puppy socialization should take precautions to have the environment and the participating puppies as free of natural exposure as possible by good hygiene and caring by careful instructors and owners.Experience and epidemiologic data support the relative safety and lack of transmission of disease in these puppy socialization classes over the past 10 years in many parts of the United States. In fact; the risk of a dog dying because of infection with distemper or parvo disease is far less than the much higher risk of a dog dying (euthanasia) because of a behavior problem. Many veterinarians are now offering new puppy owners puppy socialization classes in their hospitals or nearby training facilities in conjunction with trainers and behaviorists because they want socialization and training to be very important parts of a wellness plan for every puppy. We need to recognize that this special sensitive period for learning is the best opportunity we have to in uence behavior for dogs and the most important and longest lasting part of a total wellness plan. Are there risks? Yes. But 10 years of good experience and data, with few exceptions, offers veterinarians the opportunity to generally recommend early socialization and training classes, beginning when puppies are 8 to 9 weeks of age. However, we always follow a veterinarian’s professional judgment, in individual cases or situations, where special circumstances warrant further immunization for a special puppy before starting such classes. During any period of delay for puppy classes, owners should begin a program of socialization with children and adults, outside their family, to take advantage of this special period in a puppy’s life.

Please often ask why we don't allow on leash greetings at our socials. Some dogs who are fine with others off leash will still react to dogs on leash. On top of that on leash greetings can cause dogs to feel pressured into meeting others which can later cause reactivity issues. Unless you know how to properly handle on leash interactions between dogs they should be avoided.

Reminder! No social tomorrow 8/15.

Structured flirt pole with Nadia.

Otis is a young Heeler who came to me a few weeks ago for an evaluation to see about sending him through one of the rescues I work with. After the evaluation his owner decided she would give training a try and keep him. Yesterday she came for their first session. Otis has a lot of pent-up energy that is causing some unwanted behaviors and he has no manners. The first session we introduced leash pressure and teaching calm behavior through leashwork. Previously Otis was dragging his owner everywhere and anywhere he could. He learned the pressure quickly and i expect to me able to implement structured walks next session.

Maverick the 8 month old Husky came for a training session today. His owner has not been able to find a form of exercise that Maverick enjoyed. After he has mentioned to me that he enjoys running and chasing things i decided to break out the flirt pole. Maverick loved it!

With some dogs you just have to find and harness their natural instinct for things. Huskies like this guy were bred to run. And they inherently love to chase as well. Finding what motivates your dog is such an important part of bonding and being able to train your dog.

Once Maverick gets the idea that this is a super fun game hopefully we can beginning rules to the game to make it more structured.
