LOOK WHAT’S HERE!

We got a small number of the rice brown Milkcap Mushrooms dog toys early! The🪻lilac haze (thank you, Taylor) and 🍊tangerine red ones are still in production but coming!

You’ve all been waiting so long so we don’t want to do a long rollout. We’re thinking about just dropping them on our website Sunday at noon (EST). What are your thoughts? Let us know in the poll!

We proudly manufacture our dog toys in the US and proudly support the Democratic (and democratic) ticket this November.

It’s been really heartening for me personally to see the Democratic Party move strongly towards labor and reclaiming patriotism and heartland values. I’ve always felt a little bit in an awkward space being a veteran from the Midwest while also a liberal and a feminist with a business. The Harris/Walz ticket brings all those ideals together in a big tent way that has me hopeful.

Make a plan to vote, and vote early if you can!

🍄‍🟫 we’re FINALLY there! The latest Milkcap Mushroom samples came in this morning, and we’re so happy with the result! It was a lot of tweaking to get the material to fill in the mold properly but totally worth the wait. Cannot thank you all enough for being patient with us!

Now that we’ve signed off on the sample, we’re hoping to get a small initial order within the next month followed by a much larger one!

Lola brought a lot of love and nature back into my life when I needed it the most. She very truly helped me find my path — right to the intersection of dogs, nature, and business. I feel unbelievably lucky to have found her and that she found me.

Hi everyone, I’m Jenna, the founder of Loblola. It’s been almost a year since we first revealed our Milkcap Mushroom dog toy—a long time for it to still not be released. I wanted to share a bit about the process and things that are going on behind the scenes.

The product development process takes much longer than I ever expected. A quick breakdown of the process looks something like this: I have an idea and draw a rough sketch and description; I work with an engineer to create the CAD design of the product; we 3D print prototype(s) and then go back to edit and refine; once the design is set, we work with a local tooling company to build the steel production mold; after that we test different materials with our manufacturer until we find one that’s a good fit for the shape of the toy and its function; then we pick colors and do a final sample; finally, production!

It’s quite a lot, and it’s made even longer by the fact that we’re designing natural shapes with a lot of complex features. We want it to be beautiful, we want it to be detailed, we want it to truly resemble things you find out in the woods. For sure our design process takes MUCH longer than other companies because of that heavy focus on all the little details.

All that said, the Milkcap Mushroom is moving along. We just had the logo engraved on it this past week and are moving to do final samples in the next couple weeks.

And we haven’t just been sitting on our hands waiting... The production mold for our third toy is currently being built, and we have two more products in the design phase! What’s really great about product development is once it’s done, it’s set. So it’s really time-intensive up front, but then it smooths out for the long run.

I’m so in love with this company, this community, and what we’re building. I love that we can use it to create good in the world like planting trees and supporting dog rescues, and that those contributions will only grow over time. I’m so grateful for all of you, for being patient as we grow and enthusiastic about what we’re building.

Big news! We finally found the perfect material for our Milkcap Mushroom Dog Toy! 🍄

After testing half a dozen different TPEs, we landed on something really great! It’s durable with a little bit of flex, food-grade safe, and easy to clean!

This is the second color we’re doing (the first is a light brown), and we have a third to show you soon!

It’s quite wonderful that nowadays we have so many terms to describe our relationship with our dogs than we did in the past. While “dog owner” is the most commonly used, newer terms like “dog mom” and “kahu” better take into account the love, respect, and confidence within the human-dog bond.

The shift has followed the meteoric rise of importance dogs have had in our lives along with the increased importance placed on canine enrichment and well-being. From sleeping in barns to sleeping in our beds, it’s been a great shift for dogs and humans alike.

No matter what you call yourself, the love and care we have for our dogs is the same and all that matters.

Having a dog with reactivity can be tough and stressful. Having to constantly be scanning for potential triggers can overshadow the joy of being out or walking with your dog.

A lot of people with reactive dogs struggle with guilt. Am I doing enough? Is this my fault? Should I be trying this other training technique?

There can be a lot of embarrassment too—apologizing to other dog owners who your dog is barking at, trying to get them to refocus but them paying you zero attention.

It’s a lot of stress for both your dog and you.

While a big part of managing reactivity is working with your dog—identifying triggers, positive reinforcement training, redirecting their focus, etc.—it’s also important to give your dog a peaceful space to relax, de-stress, and just be a dog.

Nature offers us so much, and when you and your dog need a tranquil place to relax, breathe, and explore, she comes through for us again.

It matters where your dog’s toys are made

When I started Loblola, I knew without a doubt I would manufacture our dog toys in the U.S. Different countries have wildly different product safety standards and worker protections which affect not only the quality of the product, but also how ethical it is. The U.S.'s product safety standards and labor protections make for safer dog toys made by protected workers who are fairly compensated.

That being said, there are serious concerns regarding China's regulation and oversight of manufacturing as well as their regular use of forced labor. This has an adverse effect on both product quality and safety and ethicalness of the supply chain.

When a company outsources their manufacturing to another country, there is also the environmental impact of commercial shipping to consider. Roughly 90% of the world’s trade is shipped by sea which causes multiple kinds of pollution.

Our decision to manufacture our dog toys here in the U.S. was an easy one. While it may be cheaper to manufacture in China, we didn’t find it ethical, transparent, or to align with our values. Luckily we are in great company: there are many other well-made and well-loved dog toys out there that are also made in the USA.
