This is spot on! This is why we are always talking about controlling excitement. You can turn it on but you want to have the ability to turn it off. We focus on teaching the human how to have rock solid leadership skills so you can control your dog’s excitement and arousal. If this dog were a power breed with more serious intentions, this would have played out much worse than seen here.

A couple of our newest Stay-n-Train dogs working on duration work. Duration work is an underused but highly effective way to work on calming down the over excited, over aroused, anxious, worried (any higher state of mind) brain. Our approach teaches not only the dog but we focus heavily on teaching the human how to get the behaviors they’re seeking and a harmonious home.

Got a serious behavioral issue with your dog?

You can’t fix serious stuff in your dog with strictly obedience training.

Obedience is putting the dog in a “position”. This doesn’t address mindset. The mindset MUST be addressed prior to positioning or everything falls apart. This is where you, the owner, comes in.

When the owner addresses mindset (using dog psychology)then you have a dog who is now in a coachable place. Now healthier behaviors can be created and patterns can
begin to shift.

The dog must start seeing YOU as a believable fair and respectful authority figure that holds them accountable. The nuance of these cues and clues are where we come in. This isn’t through one big magical exercise, but through many tiny teachable interactions that all together create a more believable perception of you as the one who calls the shots.

Going to a general obedience class or puppy class with high squeaky voices, tons of treats and too many over excited dogs in a room will not address it.

To: All Humans,
Please remember us dogs get to know you by your scent, so when we approach you it’s because we want to SMELL you, not necessarily have a social interaction with you. Pretty please, allow us to SNIFF you (we usually start at the feet and work up the legs) , without any petting or other pressure for an interaction. Allow us to go away after the sniffs and if we want an interaction, I promise we’ll come back and loiter next to you. That’s when know we’re ready for pets and an interaction. Guess what? No squeaky voices needed either! All that excitement just adds to overwhelming us which may cause silliness like jumping or nipping. When you’re walking your dog with a nice loose leash (which is what we teach ALL our clients) and you slow down and stop. Without using words, where does your dog stop; behind you, next to you, in front of you? DOES your dog stop? How aware of you is your dog?
These two pics are of a recent check in. Which picture shows a more respectable boundary and awareness? Which picture shows a little pushiness , maybe trying to control the resources of space or activity.
Seeing this helps us know where the relationship needs work. I am SO proud of this couple and especially Brigid for absolutely killin it yesterday at Cash’s Go Home session. Way to rock it! 💪🏻👋👋❤️🐶

If you’re seeing issues with your dog, being committed to the purpose and intent BEHIND the interactions with your dog will make a world of difference. Take the initiative and move your body with purpose and intention; don’t wait for the dog to initiate the activity. Otherwise they are leading, and you are following…

Follow thru: two words- seems easy enough, right? 😩 It’s THE hardest part because it requires discipline. I push against anything in my life that requires a rule, a boundary, a limit or any form of discipline so I get it. It takes work and effort to get a dog that doesn’t act like a knucklehead that you can take anywhere and everywhere. If you have a serious dog, you may be pushed out of your comfort zone to get there, but it can happen and we can help you.
