When the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11, 2001, about 10,000 emergency rescue workers joined together to help .More than 300 of those heroes were dogs. Remembering both two legged and four legged first responders today.

In 1964, The New York Times profiled a 32-year-old Upper East Sider who left a comfortable job in electronics to do something no one else was doing: walk dogs, professionally. Armed with leashes and charm, Buck strolled Manhattan’s sidewalks with five, six, sometimes eight dogs at a time, drawing crowds and one-liners from doormen and cops alike.

He wasn’t just walking dogs. He was building an institution.

By the time he died in 2013, Jim Buck was widely credited as the first professional dog walker in NYC—and likely the country. Rain, snow, or Park Avenue sunshine, he showed up in a tie, often with a better stride than the men in suits.
