Happy Friday! Here showing off another artistic ear hematoma repair we did for our beautiful Holly girl. We had tried to resolve her hematoma with medication, but since it didn’t fully resolve and started to get big again, we went ahead and drained it and corrected her hematoma surgically.

For those who don’t know, an aural or ear hematoma happens when dogs typically shake/scratch/traumatize their ear vessels causing bleeding in between the ear cartilages. This blood becomes like a “swollen pillow” which in turn makes the ear pinna heavy and bothersome to the pet. With surgery the goal is to drain the blood and place multiple sutures over the affected area to allow the cartilages to stay together and heal without allowing blood to re accumulate. The buttons help to spread the tension of the sutures and allow for more surface area to be covered. Of course we choose sparkly/pretty buttons to make our patients look even cuter while healing.

We hope Holly has a speedy recovery and gets lots of compliments on her bedazzled ear!! 🤩🥰

Happy Monday!! Today we got to say hi to one of our previous employees and now officially a veterinarian, Dr. Natalia, when she brought in her cat Ibiza for her annual exam. As part of a full circle, she was seen by another former employee, and now a 4th year vet student doing an externship with us, Hunter. The exciting part is that they will both be together again soon in Florida as Hunter finishes her last clinical year and Dr. Natalia starts her internship at the same vet school in UF. We wish both of them all the best in their on going education and also enjoy being part of their mentorship 🥹🤩🩺🐾

Have you heard about LEPTOSPIROSIS or “Lepto” infection in dogs????

Is your dog vaccinated for Lepto???

Do you take your dog on walks? hikes? to a dog park? to swim in a lake or pond? Does he ever lick/eat soil? Drink out of a puddle of water/lake??

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then your dog should be vaccinated for Leptospirosis!! (This includes pretty much all dogs!)

Lepto is a bacterial infection that affects most mammals (including humans) and that can cause a range of symptoms, affecting most commonly the liver and kidney, sometimes becoming fatal if not detected/treated on time. On top of this, it is also considered zoonotic, which means humans can become infected from animals.

The good news is that there are vaccines available to give your dog and this should be maintained on a yearly basis to prevent infection. If possible, try to avoid your dog from drinking out of stagnant water sources/puddles as well.

Give us a call if you have questions or are interested in vaccinating your dog against Leptospirosis. (919) 249-7053.

Please find below a link for more details on Lepto from the AVMA

Today was bittersweet as we officially said goodbye to our eldest employee on staff, Fabi. Fabi came to Happy Tails in the summer of 2020 as a volunteer just a few months after we opened our doors. We eventually hired her in the Fall of 2020 and she remained a full time employee until she was accepted into the class of 2025 at NC State Vet School. Once she started vet school, she went down to part time and, now that she is starting her last/clinical year, she will no longer be able to work with us. We are so proud of Fabi, of her achievements, and wish her the best of luck in her last school year and always. We are sure she will be a great vet!!!!

Did you know that dogs and cats have their own unique blood types and, just like us, sometimes they need a lifesaving blood transfusion??? For dogs there are 7 main blood types with the universal blood type considered to be the DEA 1.1 negative. Not many dogs can be blood donors or have the universal blood type, however among those special breeds, Greyhounds are considered to be one of the few universal blood donors.

Today we want to give a big thanks and shout out to Apple, one of our very special patients (and her human family) for being on stand by twice now for a possible blood donation/transfusion for two sweet patients that have had splenectomies (spleen removal surgery) over the past few months. Thankfully, we have not needed to collect blood from Apple in these cases, but her willingness to help out has definitely made it possible for these surgeries to be done by Dr. C with a bit more peace of mind knowing she could come and step in if needed.

In Emmy’s case, sadly she had a very aggressive cancer growing in her spleen called hemangiosarcoma and, even though she enjoyed some extra time with her family after her surgery, she has already crossed the rainbow bridge 🌈. In Oliver’s case, he was lucky to be cancer free and is doing pretty well so far after his surgery 💚. Both Emmy’s and Oliver’s human families gifted Apple with adorable toys and treats 🍎.

Happy Saturday!! This new year has started off good and pretty busy at Happy Tails. We’ve met adorable new puppies, some naughty patients that have eaten things they’re not supposed to (like fudge and towels 😬😬) and some fashionistas that visit us with cozy and cute sweaters, among others 🥰. As always we look forward to a new year of helping our patients stay healthy and help them when they’re not feeling their best. ❤️ourpatients ❤️ourjob
