Happy Sunday!! We have puppies!

🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾

Daisy started lightly panting around 2pm on Sunday, she was 3 days overdue. We set up a live steam around 7:30 pm as her labor progressed.

Things were so incredibly slow and she took a long time getting to the birthing phase! First puppy was a black male weighing in at only 7 oz. He was tiny, but active. Unfortunately he was born with Asplasia Cutis. This is where there is an open wound on the top of the head where the “soft spot” did not close. This coupled with his small size has been very concerning. He is not yet able to join the litter and we are hand feeding. Only time will tell for this little one, but he has already stolen my ❤️

Puppy 2 showed up in a little under an hour. He was a little lethargic upon birth and was 12 oz., but recovered well. He is a black male and is now the traveling puppy, as he is always moving about the bed 🙂

Puppy 3 came 18 minutes later, a nice big boy 🙂 He weighed 1 1b. and is a chocolate.

Puppy 4 was the largest puppy at a whopping 1 lb. 1 oz. He is another black male, very active and vocal. He was delivered 9 minutes after the 3rd pup.

Puppy 5 came quickly after 26 minutes of labor. He is a black male at 14 oz.

Puppy 6 gave us our first female puppy! A beautiful black pup weighing in at 13 oz.

Puppy 7 was another black male, also weighing 14 oz. We only waited 15 minutes for his appearance.

Puppy 8 was our second female, another black pup at almost 15 oz. Daisy rested before her birth so it took an hour and 12 minutes for her birth.

Puppy 9 came in quietly, 40 minutes later. This pup was almost 1 lb and a black male.

It was about 5:00 am, birthing had stopped, so I got my supplies together and bottle-fed puppy 1. I could hold him up to Daisy to eat, which I did, but he wasn’t getting enough, so I began to supplement. I treated his head wound with Manuka honey, it is great for being anti-bacterial and helping open wounds to heal. We will do our best with him. At 7am I was exhausted and headed to bed, Bobby took over the puppy care.

Puppy 10 arrived almost 4 hours later. This was a yellow male weighing 15 oz.. This puppy belongs to Katie who was given pick of the litter. His name is
Mallard 🙂 🦆 Congratulations Katie!

Puppy 11 arrived after another 2 hr gap. Unfortunately this yellow female did not make it. Stillborn puppies are very common in large litters. This was a very large litter for her.

Puppy 12 arrived after another 3 1/2 hr gap, also a stillborn, and also a yellow female.

We run a little contest each year guessing facts about the litter. This year’s winner is Julie A Griffin! Her guess was near perfect! She gets to provide a theme for this year’s litter… stay tuned for that 🙂

And special thanks to my daughter Thisissarah Long for taking meticulous notes and organizing the contest results! Great job!

So Daisy’s due date is today! She has shown definite signs of being close, but just not close enough! We took her and Buckshot on a chilly walk to see if that would spur her into motion, but so far it is a no go… fingers crossed for tomorrow! Check out her belly 🥰

Here is how our pack hangs out. Buckshot always lays near or on his momma Clare, Daisy sleeps alone 🙂

Yes, they all get along great, but BS is definitely a momma’s boy 😂

Daisy is now finished with her heat cycle, her and BS have mated at least 4 times, maybe more, so we are expecting a nice healthy litter around Jan 20th. If you know anyone who would be interested in an adorable Labrador puppy, please refer them to our Fbook page (https://www.facebook.com/orchardknoll) or our instagram account ()

Thank you!

Ok, thought I would give an update on Buckshot, it isn’t great! So we took the stitches out on day 10 (last Sat.). 30 minutes later the wound was completely opened, the skin didn’t stay closed. This was a trip to the emergency vet, of course! He was not bothered by it and did not exhibit discomfort at all which was a blessing. It was also a blessing that the wound opened because the tissue underneath was necrotic (dead)!

From what we can piece together the Sebaceous cyst is a really nasty deal and the stuff that comes out is just caustic and probably killed the tissue. We would not have known this unless the skin, which looked perfectly healthy, had opened. That could have been a fatal infection, so we are glad things worked out the way they did.

So this brings us to the fix. He had surgery at 2 am on Sunday morning to clean out the dead tissue, once done they had to put stitches in a circle around the wound, then they packed the wound with gauze and tied a lace through the stitches and over the gauze to hold it down. It was very clever and it allows them to open the gauze and clean the wound every 36 to 48 hours over the next few weeks. This is open wound management because the skin on the back is tight and there is no tissue underneath, so it can’t be sewn shut yet.

Over the next few weeks his tissue will grow and fill in and they will continue to pull the stitches to get the skin tight to where they can eventually sew it together. Unfortunately for Buckshot this means he will be sedated and have his wound cleaned and gauze changed every few days. Unfortunately for us, this cyst is costing a lot more than we expected! I think if we were to do it again, if we ever have another dog with a cyst, we will have it removed immediately.

For those interested in the medical side of it, I will post pictures in the comments, I don’t want to gross anyone out so I won’t include them here. The picture on this post is Buckshot going back to the vet after his big surgery, the whites of his eyes tell you how he was feeling 😂 :)

So our boy Buckshot developed a Sebaceous cyst on his back over a year ago. A lot of dogs get these, it has to do with their hair follicle. It is not a genetic condition and can happen to any breed. The vet advised us that if it remained solid it was not a problem.

Last week it started swelling and leaking and an enormous amount of gross stuff came out of it 🤢 Once it does this it needs to be removed. He went on a strong antibiotic for a week and had his surgery today.

The vet we use allows him to recover in our home, so he was returned to us with a bunch of stitches and fast asleep.

He made it through the procedure fine and is waking up now. It will be a long afternoon 😀

If anyone has a dog that gets this, don’t be fooled by thinking it looks better on the outside, the tumor they cut out under the skin is quite large, just because the top part that you can see drains and looks better does not fix the problem, surgery is necessary to avoid reoccurrences and to keep the infection from spreading internally.

Sorry for the pics, tried to get the least icky pics possible to show after surgery results. Stitches come out in 10 days.

Hi everyone!! Hope you are enjoying this humid August!! We sure are :) We are watching our neighbors dog this week and she just happens to be one of Clare's puppies! Also, she is Buckshot's sister! They are having a good time and she is such a pretty pup. Thought I would share some lab shots since I haven't posted in awhile!

Feel free to post some of your "summer fun" pics with your pups! I love to see them as they grow :)
