🎉 Celebrating One Year of Doggie Daze Kennel! 🎉

Hi, everyone! My name is Aliyah Schmidt, and as we mark the one-year anniversary of Doggie Daze Kennel, I wanted to share the journey that led us here.

My love for dogs began as far back as I can remember. It was in 2016, at my very first job at Tailwaggers, that this passion began to take shape. Working there, I realized just how much joy and fulfillment I found in caring for dogs.

In 2018, I convinced my parents to let me get a dog. At just 16 years old, I had no idea how much this decision would change my life. Huxley, my mischievous puppy, became my constant companion and the spark that ignited my journey.

Around that time, I started a new job as a kennel hand at a training facility. There, I met some incredible people who would become my mentors and lifelong friends. Working under the guidance of these amazing individuals—who now run Honor Your Dog: Training & Behavior Solutions, Miller Heights K9 Academy, Canine Evolution LLC, and Patriot Labrador Retrievers—was an invaluable experience. Together, they helped me train Huxley, my little whirlwind, and I soaked up every bit of knowledge they shared.

As life moved on, so did we. I eventually found myself at MeadowView Kennels(our current facility building), working for Greg, who was more than just a boss. He became a grandfather figure to me, always bringing me McDonald's or Kwik Trip breakfast almost every morning. Over the 3-4 years I worked there, we built a bond that went beyond work.

A little after COVID-19 hit, Greg had to close MeadowView Kennels due to family health issues, making it a difficult time for all of us. Even though I was in college, studying for my Bachelor's degree in Business, I would come back whenever I could to work and cherish those last moments before he had to shut it down.

A year later, with the building still vacant, I had a crazy idea. I called Greg and asked if he would mentor me to reopen the business. His excitement and unwavering support were immediate. With his guidance and the encouragement of my family and friends, I spent months planning how a 21-year-old could run a business while finishing her degree.

And so, Doggie Daze Kennel was born. Over the past year, I've worked 12-hour days, seven days a week, all while completing my degree online. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of everyone around me, especially my family.

But above all, I owe so much to Huxley. She is the inspiration behind our logo, the driving force behind my dreams, and my faithful companion through it all. From high school to college, through tears and laughter, she has been there, pushing me to never give up.

Huxley, the sassiest and most beautiful dog, has seen me through every milestone. She’s the reason I get out of bed on tough days and the reason I strive to be better. Using her ears as our logo was a no-brainer because, after all, she is the heart and soul of this journey.

So here's to Huxley, to Greg, and to all the amazing people who believed in me. Now, at 22, as I finish up my degree and prepare to graduate in less than a month, I'm filled with gratitude and pride. Happy one-year anniversary of Doggie Daze Kennel! Thank you all for your incredible support. We couldn't have done it without you.

Puppy (and dog) Pro Tip:

DO NOTHING

That’s right. Go out into the world and teach your dog to be neutral and unbothered by anything and everything. Let them sit and observe. Reinforce by rewarding engagement with YOU especially when it’s unprompted. Help them learn how to settle and be comfortable in any and all environments.

I couldn’t count the number of times I’ve been told “they’re sooo well behaved” be it my dog or a clients dog when all the dog is doing is laying there enjoying the day.

Start small and build up. Next to the couch while you watch tv, on the front porch watching the birds fly by, at a dog friendly patio with a couple strangers or a full blown volleyball tournament at a rowdy bar. Start far away and get a little closer each session as your dog masters it.

No strange dog needs to “say hi to your dog.” Especially on leash. They will NEVER be permitted to when I’m their handler.

Not every person needs to address your dog either. One or two here and there is fine as long as the dog I’m working with is completely calm, under control and engaged with me! If that person seems trustworthy, they can have a quick pet and nothing more. They only reason they get that much is to practice ignoring people in a more challenging way.

“No, sorry, we are in training” is a polite way to decline.
Would you let random strangers come touch your child’s face or body? I wouldn’t. Why would I let them do that to my dog? Especially when I’m trying to teach them that the world around them isn’t something to get nervous or overly excited about?

We need more balanced dogs in this world. Your dog needs a more balanced world to be in. YOU create that balance. So PLEASE! Go out and do nothing with your dog
