Additional information on road closures:

According to signs posted recently, Outagamie County will be closing County Road N from Emons Road to CE as of July 30th.

Construction has begun on the State Park Road/KK intersection so you are no longer able to cross State Park from either direction. You can access our driveway from the west (County N) end through the barricades at Hopfensperger Road.

WE ARE HERE!

Highway KK / State Park Road Construction
ROAD IS OPEN TO CROSSROADS

When you have business with a location within the closed area you are allowed to travel that stretch of road.

Be aware that you can travel up to State Park Road on County KK but you cannot cross it from either direction.

At the current time your best bet coming from the north is CE to DeBruin to Block to Hopfensperger to County KK. From the south, due to the construction on State Park from 10 to Schmidt Road it is best to travel up County N to KK.

Hope this helps!

Being at the intersection of two counties and two towns/villages makes road construction season always very interesting. As always during the road construction season, allow yourself a little extra travel time. You never know who is going to close a section of road next!

Newest Update:
Outagamie County has put up signs that it will be closing County N north of KK from CE to Emons Road as of 7/30.

Update from Calumet County:

7/22/2024
Traffic will be able to go from County N to State Park Road from the west and from State 55 to State Park Road from the east but traffic will not be able to cross State Park Road from either direction. They are planning to be finished with the construction before school starts. When the road reopens the lights will not yet be installed due to a backorder on the poles for the lights.

Beginning Wednesday May 1st the clinic will be undergoing some interior improvements.

Unfortunately this may mean some disruptions to our normal flow for the next few weeks as the workers work their magic. At times we may direct you to enter/exit through different doors so please pay attention to the signage as you approach the building. If the smell of paint bothers you we can do your pet's appointment curbside, as we did during COVID if you prefer.

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out.

12/01/2023

We know many of you have been hearing media reports of the "mystery respiratory illness" that is affecting dogs. We have been cautious about sharing information on this disease until we felt like we had reputable information to share with you and not just media hype. At this point unfortunately there is much that is unknown about this disease. The most important of these unknowns is that we have no idea what is causing it. Until we have this information it is very difficult to give advice to our clients on how to keep our patients safe.

Currently the best advice we can give you is to avoid having your dog in settings where there are multiple dogs -- especially dogs that are unknown to you. This may prove more difficult with the holidays coming up and many dogs potentially needing to be in boarding situations. If your dog does need to be in a boarding/grooming/daycare situation please consider the following:

*Make sure they are current on all vaccines including bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine.

*Consider having them vaccinated for canine influenza. This may not be of much help right now since it takes approximately 6 weeks for them to develop full immunity against the virus, but even some protection could be beneficial.

If your pet should develop a cough please contact our office for an appointment. We will evaluate each pet individually and may recommend chest x-rays, respiratory testing and/or antibiotics as part of their treatment.

https://www.petmd.com/general-health/cosequin-vs-dasuquin

At our clinic, we recommend joint supplements anytime there is a joint injury - like a strain, sprain or damaged ligament (such as a CCL tear), or if there is "old age stiffness" or occasional limping.

Over time, the cartilage and ligaments around the joints - particularly the knees, elbows and hips - begin to wear down which can lead to stiffness and struggles getting up after laying for a while. At any age, when your pet exercises, their muscles, ligaments and cartilage can have small tears and breakdown. With younger, healthy dogs - their body is quick to produce the necessary components to repair any damage. In dogs that are genetically more prone to joint disease, their body has a hard time repairing fast enough so there is more breakdown than repair.

Please ask your veterinary team for recommendations for joint supplements.

Cosequin® and Dasuquin® are two Nutramax® brands that provide health supplement products for dogs and cats. Learn what's common and different about the brands and which product may work best for your pet.

Today is National Relaxation Day!

We hope you get to take some time for yourself and have a minute or an hour or the day to relax - preferably with lots of pet snuggles and kisses!

We'd love to see pictures of how your pets like to relax in their "free time!"

Remember that it takes a lot of energy to be that cute all the time, so they need a day to just relax and be pampered and enjoy their favorite activities - oh wait, that's supposed to be everyday! 😄

Happy Throwback Thursday!

We are calling these our throwback images because many of these pets have changed a bit in appearance since their first time at our clinic, but we still wanted to feature them!

It has been a crazy summer/year with lots of new pets to be featured!

We had some major rockstars in the group, both in getting their picture taken and for their exams! We are proud of every one of them that make their way into our family and happy to have them with us! 😁

INTRODUCING A NEW PRODUCT!

We want to introduce our newest product, Nexgard Combo. It is a topical flea, tick, heartworm and intestinal parasite (certain species) preventatives for cats. It is to be used every 30 days for adequate prevention of the listed parasites.

It is applied with an easy to use applicator to the skin at the base of the neck on your cat companion. It is a great tool to use to keep your cat healthy, especially if they are higher risk, like those living indoor/outdoor, just outdoor, or those that live with dogs. Even if your cat never goes outside, we recommend preventatives because we go outside and so do our dogs. We are all capable of bringing unwanted "friends" home with us so using a preventative monthly can help avoid a costly treatment down the line.

Please note, this product will be taking the place of our previously used, Revolution Plus for cats. If you have been previously using Revolution Plus, this will be the alternative. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

As always, please contact our veterinary office if you have any questions or are interested in trying this product for your pet!

Enrichment is essential for the health of your cat! The provided link has some great options for DIY and store-bought options to increase the activity and mental stimulation of your feline companion.

They are natural hunters and most of the time, when provided food via a food dish, your cat can become bored. This can lead to an increase in begging for food, counter prowling (similar to counter-surfing in dogs), obesity due to overfeeding and destructive behaviors, such as overgrooming causing hair loss and skin irritation, and inappropriate urination and deification outside the litterbox.

There are many causes for the listed conditions, so, as always, please contact your vet if you are having any concerns.

Cat enrichment prevents boredom, burns energy, and helps reduce stress or anxiety in our cats. Read about what enrichment is, enrichment ideas and DIY tips

Does your pet love to swim? Do you take your pet to the lake or local pond to swim in?

While we do not want to take away all the fun from your furry companion, we do want them to stay healthy! We have had a unusually high level of cyanobacteria/blue-green algae in the water so far this year and it may continue. This has caused an increase in vomiting, diarrhea and skin infection cases that we have seen this summer.

Some of the blue-green algae can produce toxins that when consumed or contacted by the skin can cause itchiness, vomiting, diarrhea, organ damage and death. If the pet has contact enough of the toxin, it can become fatal quickly.

If you would not want to swim in the water, neither should your pet. If you chose to let your pet swim, we recommend bathing afterwards with an antibacterial and/or hydrating shampoo to get the dirt, microscopic organisms (such as parasites) and algae off the skin. It is important to clean the fur and skin thoroughly and dry the undercoat fully because prolonged moisture exposure can cause irritation and possible skin infection.

With the hot weather outside, please be mindful of your pets' health. Below are some tips to keep them safe this summer:
1. Keep them indoors when the weather is really hot - this is especially true for double/thick coated dogs, brachycephalic breeds and black fur colored dogs
2. If you cannot safely keep you hand on the concrete or asphalt without getting burned, neither can your pet. Please keep them on the grass or have them wear pet shoes to protect their paws.
3. Play for only short bursts at a time when playing outdoors - provide plenty of water and shade and adequate rest time. Bright red gums, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive panting, and excessive drooling (that is not normal for your pet) can be signs of heat exhaustion/heat stroke. Get your pet to a cool environment and provide cool water and ice cubes and call your vet if you have concerns.

Here is a link that has good recommendation for keeping your pet hydrated properly if you think your pet is not drinking enough. Dehydration can cause organ damage if not treated properly - kidney failure and heart disease most problematic.

Remember fireworks are beautiful and amazing but scary for many pets. Please use extra caution during the holiday and time leading up to it.

05/16/2023

Have you heard of "Blastomycosis?" This disease can affect people and pets, alike. While this disease primarily affects people and dogs, there have been some cases of cats getting it, as well.

This is a fungal infection that typically starts in the lungs/nasal passages and can spread to affect other organ systems, such as liver, kidney and nervous system.

This disease is difficult to diagnose, as it can present similarly to many other diseases, which is why letting your veterinary team know if your pet is at higher risk is so beneficial. Those pets that are most at risk are those that spend time in areas with continuous moist soils, thicker vegetation and near waterways such as lakes, rivers, streams and ponds. These would be dogs that are taken hiking, camping and in suburban areas. The moist soil with decaying vegetation makes it a prime spot for this fungus to germinate and spread spores, which can then be inhaled and settle in the lungs.

When you go to your doctor - the staff seem to ask you all kinds of questions and you may be wondering "why does this matter" or possibly that saying you are not having concerns will help avoid the game of 20 questions....

The same happens when you bring your pet to the vet's office - only they can't answer our questions so that job lands on you!

We ask similar questions and it may seem repetitive having to answer them; however, our veterinary team tries to gather as much information as possible to be able to assess what is best for your pet based on the answers.
The following link goes into detail about why we ask what we ask and what are types of diagnostic tools that we recommend and why. https://healthypets.substack.com/p/vet-wellness-visit

The major part of our job is not only taking care of your pets - but helping you take care of them. We are happy to answer any questions that you have regarding the care of your furry friend! Do not be afraid to ask questions because, while we try to explain our process and give you the best knowledge we can about what we are doing, we are always happy to explain further. Our job is to care for you, as well as your pets!
