Pet Diabetes Month is a great reminder that noticing the early signs of diabetes and seeking treatment promptly can make a huge difference for the long term health and comfort of your furry family member.
••••
If diagnosed as diabetic, your primary veterinarian will provide and oversee your pet’s treatment including insulin, diet modifications, and weight management. If vision changes or cloudiness are observed, your veterinarian will refer you to an Ophthalmologist for a cataract evaluation.
••••
We understand that these changes can be sudden and stressful. Our office is here to provide you with all the necessary information and treatment options so that you may make the best decision for your family and your pet.

Cosmetic filler for cats? Yep! Similar to the injection used for human lip filler, subdermal filler can be used to treat cats with entropion.
••••
is an abnormal inward rolling of an eyelid. This can cause painful friction as hair rubs against the surface of the eye. For cats, it is most common for the lower eyelids to be affected and this can be a result from orbital fat loss due to aging. The use of lid filler can be a less invasive alternative to corrective surgery.
••••
Prevention of entropion is not always possible, but regular veterinary exams, weight monitoring, and prompt treatment of any eye discomfort is recommended to minimize the chances and allow for more treatment options if needed.

When snakes fail to shed their brille it’s called a retained spectacle and can lead to blindness. To prevent this, owners should make sure that their reptile habitat is well maintained and at the proper temperature and humidity for molting.

Fluffy the adorable is ready for the weekend now that the foxtail has been removed from under his third eyelid.

Taurine is exclusively found in animal proteins, most commonly organ meats and seafood. For cats, this amino acid is essential for vision, digestion, heart health, and vitality.
••••
Taurine-depleted cats can develop which can lead to blindness. Taurine deficiency can be identified through bloodwork with your primary veterinarian or veterinary specialist.
••••
If your cat is not receiving enough taurine from their diet, taurine supplements may be an option and should be discussed with a veterinary professional. Otherwise, balanced commercial cat food should contain enough taurine for adult cats, but check the label to make sure the food meets The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines.

08/25/2023

Chronic superficial keratitis (CSK, commonly referred to as Pannus) is an immune-mediated condition affecting the cornea. It occurs most often in German Shepherds, Belgian Shepherds, and Border collies, but other breeds may also be affected.
••••
Early signs of CSK include a non-painful red/pink corneal lesion, inflamed third eyelids, dark corneal pigment, and mucoid discharge. In some cases, the corneal lesion may affect vision. If left untreated, CSK can cause blindness.
••••
Treatment for CSK involves using topical corticosteroids
and/or immunosuppressive agents. On occasion, an injection of steroid medication under the conjunctiva may be necessary. For more information about CSK screening and treatment options, please contact our office.

06/23/2023

Foxtails also called spear grass are barbed seed clusters with sharp points. When these clusters dry out and detach from the base plant, they attach to any available surface and root themselves deep. If a foxtail pierces the skin, it is designed to “dig” inward and its barbed design makes it tricky to remove.
••••
The most common points of foxtail entry on a pet are through the nose, ears, mouth, and eyes. A foxtail under the eyelid can cause corneal ulcer and conjunctivitis and with migration, lead to orbital infection and pain. If a foxtail enters the eye, it can cause infection, inflammation and potentially blindness. Squinting with ocular discharge, lethargy, and loss of appetite are all possible signs of a foxtail injury and require immediate medical attention.
••••
During the summer, these pesky plants are shedding seeds rapidly. Make sure to check your pet after walks and try to avoid exposure to foxtail plants if possible.

06/09/2023

Allergic conjunctivitis appears as an increased pinkness and swelling of the conjunctiva (membrane that lines the whites of the eyes and the inner eyelid). It may or may not be accompanied by discomfort (evidenced by squinting), excessive tearing, and discharge.
••••
Environmental smoke, plug-in air fresheners and pollen exposure can exacerbate this disease. Droopy lids or deep set eyes such as those found in and are more prone to this condition. With the recent heavy rainfall and superbloom of plants and flowers, we are seeing an increased incidence and duration of allergies and allergic conjunctivitis. If the symptoms are persistent, medical attention is recommended!
••••
Treatment often includes the use of eye wash, cold compress, steroid eye drops, artificial tears, and anti inflammatory medications.

05/03/2023

A corneal sequestrum is a part of the cornea which has died off (necrotic corneal tissue) and as a result is being rejected by the remaining healthy cornea. Sequestra often appear in or near the center of the cornea and can appear as a brown or black stain. In many affected patients, dark tear staining and discharge may also occur.
••••
Some sequestra may heal with medical management (antibiotics and lubricants), but large or deep sequestra may require surgical excision with possible grafting to reduce the risk of a corneal rupture.

For more information on corneal sequestra and other ophthalmic conditions, please contact our animal care team at (831) 685-3321.
