LAST CLASSES FOR 2024

Classes taught here on the farm in Aptos (95003) with registration through Cabrillo College's Extension. Class size capped to 10 adults for a more personal experience. Relaxed and informative classes held in our 2,000 sq.ft. poultry barn with refreshments, a tour of the flocks, and comfortable seating.

You want to provide better hands on care for your flock.

SOLD - Opal Legbar hen
Hatched in 2023 and vaccinated for Mareks. Just came through her molt and still looks a smidge bedraggled. Currently laying beautiful blue eggs. Stunning opal feathering - her crest will grow back in without amorous roosters tugging on it.

SOLD -F1 Olive Egger hen - Blue Crested
Hatched 3/9/24 and vaccinated for Mareks. Still hasn't regrown all of her tail feathers from her molt. Gorgeous crest, beautiful blue feathers, and lays an olive green egg.

Heatstroke for chickens?!

Yes, one of the biggest dangers our flocks face is heatstroke. Our birds can't take off those down coats, right? Keep in mind that the chickens can get heat stress, dehydrate, stop laying, etc when the temperatures soar.

Suggestions:
Provide lots of dirt in the shade - in the run and free ranging
Make sure there's ample cross ventilation
Check that all waterers work - add more water
Offer frozen veggies and fruit in water
Or offer chunk fruit like watermelon
Spray the soil to bring temperatures down (or use a mister)
Spray the chickens down in prolonged heat

I just sprayed the soil, the birds, checked my waterers, and turned on the barn fans. It is HOT here in Aptos!

Yes, there was a big fire this afternoon at my neighbor, Bamboo Giant.
We initially watched with some anxiety, but it quickly became apparent that the first responders had it well in hand.
Thank you to the Peeps who checked in on me: I'm grateful for your concern.

"This sweet Ameraucana cockerel is looking for a new home. Hatched 8/13 ad handled daily, he is a nice, caring young bird who looks after his flock well. Super cute with a lot of personality."

He's vaccinated for Mareks and has been much loved by his family. Very handsome young guy with a sweet temperament!

Posting for one of my Peeps, Zoe...

She purchased this straight run blue crested F1 Olive Egger chick from me that had the audacity to grow a comb and a crow!

Zoe says "His hatch date was 6/6/24, he is in good health, and fairly calm and easy to handle. His features are in good condition and he is developing a small crest.

We've been feeding him Kalmbach medicated chick starter and small amounts of chicken scratch and dried grubs."

He's vaccinated for Mareks and ready for a new home. Do you have room in your flock for this sweet boy?
