We cannot begin to say THANK YOU enough to everyone who came out and supported our 1st Annual Pintwood Derby! A lot of work happened behind the scenes and it hasn't gone unnoticed. Thank you! Brudergarten Beer Garden at Shepherd’s Old Field Market was our incredible and gracious host. The weather was absolutely perfect to hang out in their large open area to watch the races. What a great place to spend the afternoon. Silvestro Entertainment was our MC and kept the races exciting for everyone.

Best of all, the community came together and helped us raise $2000 for the local youth!

Planning for the 2nd Annual Pintwood Derby is already underway. Keep your eyes open for a date to be announced soon!

Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge’s Cadillac “Dog Wagons”

Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge was an animal lover and she founded the Morris & Essex Kennel Club.

Her “Dog Wagons” were built on extended 1939 Cadillac “Sixty Special” chassis. The two cars, six and eight door limousines, fitted with coachwork by an unknown maker, were used to transport her show dogs.

It is a special Cadillac with a 200-inch wheelbase; the interior has ample accommodations for eight dogs to ride in comfort. The cages are made of duralumin and built as part of the car although they are removable if it is desired to take them out.

We had a wonderful time talking to students at Father Andrew White, S.J. School’s Career Day today. They are celebrating Catholic Schools Week and today was a celebration of Community. There were speakers for a dozen careers and Watch and I spoke to 3rd through 8th graders about being a dog trainer and safety around dogs.

Watch made his career day debut yesterday at Mother Catherine Academy. His solid temperament shone as he waited patiently during the boring discussion and then soaked up the attention of the children during the meet and greet. I’m very proud of him and the fabulous dog that he is maturing into. And many thanks to MCA for the invite again this year. We look forward to next year’s event.

“It is far more fair to help the dog make the 'right' choice, than it is to punish him for something he can't possibly know is 'wrong'.”

This phrase is priceless. Think on it for a while.

Your daily anecdote:

Ever hear the phrase "You get what you pet"?

If your dog struggles to keep his feet on the floor and his mouth closed when greeting you or guests, it is because he has been either internally or externally reinforced for that behavior.

What you *think* is punishing to the dog, may in fact be encouraging the behavior.

Remember, you must limit the dogs options, guide the appropriate choice, and control the outcome of the dogs decision.

It is far more fair to help the dog make the 'right' choice, than it is to punish him for something he can't possibly know is 'wrong'.

Bohdi has been here for 6 weeks so far. He went on his first outing yesterday. We took a trip to Gettysburg and worked through a Reptile Expo. He was a complete rockstar. It was incredibly crowded and he matched my pace throughout, held his stays, and ignored all of the interesting things on the tables. The pics caption what he’s practicing.

Welcome to the Good Dog! family Bohdi! There are a lot of high hopes for this boy as a potential service dog. I’m excited to work with him this fall on his obedience and exposure work.

Poor Dixie has gotten the short end of the stick. She’s been here for 4 weeks and the only pictures I have of her are on the scale. 😂 I finally took some today during an outing to the Leonardtown wharf where she people watched. She’ll be headed home this week after her CGC evaluation.

Over feeding your dog is no joke. I’m quick to say that I’ll be the first to tell someone when their dog is overweight. We all know the health implications of obesity in humans and it’s no different for our animals (any species).

Most dogs that come through my doors are overweight or obese. I’ll have a conversation with the owners and will often say that their dog will lose some weight while with me. But it’s up to the owner to either continue the health journey for their dog or not.

Funny story: My girl Kari blew her ACL at just shy of 2 years old. I took her to my vet and he referred me to a surgeon (now retired). I walked in the surgeons office and he evaluated her. We set up a surgery date and as we were walking out the door, he THANKED me for allowing him to work on such a fit and healthy dog. The vast majority of dogs that walked through his door were obese and blew their knees out because of their weight.

Do right by your dog and help them live a healthy, happy life. Measure their food with an actual measuring cup, adjust their food based on their activity level, and evaluate their body condition at each meal before putting that food in the bowl. You should be able to see a defined waistline from above and a tuck from the rib cage to the groin from the side. Seeing a couple of ribs is OK and healthy! Seeing prominent hip bones on most breeds is NOT OK (many sight hound breeds have prominent hip bones and this is OK). Know what your dog should look like at a healthy weight and help them get there.
