The 🔑key to long-term soundness and health in your weanling or yearling starts with their diet.

Balanced levels of calcium, phosphorus, and trace minerals are essential to preventing developmental orthopedic diseases, like OCDs, while protein and amino acids help them form strong bones, healthy muscles, and a robust immune system. ✨

Intensify Growth & Development was specifically formulated for growing horses and supports healthy development with guaranteed nutrients, organic minerals, and natural vitamins.

Just because we might overeat on Thanksgiving, doesn’t mean our horses need to. 😉🦃

Offering 24/7 access is key to helping your horse stay warm throughout the winter months, but for easy keepers or horses who gain weight easily, it can pose a serious challenge.

The best way to prevent your horse from overeating is…slowing them down! ⏳

Use a hay net or slow feeder with extra small holes. Our favorite is the 1-Inch Slow Feed Extreme net from Hay Chix!

If your horse doesn’t do well with hay nets, try feeding smaller meals throughout the day instead.

As silly as it sounds, the "carrot test" can be used to help diagnose tooth aches in our equine companions.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EORTH) is a dental condition that affects the incisors of middle-aged horses and older. As the name suggests, it acts by both resorbing the teeth and then producing large amounts of cementum (a hard substance that anchors the teeth into place).

Clinical signs such as difficulty chewing, teeth discoloration and painful gums are highly suspicious for this disease, but you can also offer your horse a carrot to assess how comfortable they are biting down. If it seems painful for them while biting the carrot, they could have EORTH!

Your veterinarian can do an oral examination and take dental radiographs to confirm the diagnosis. This is a progressive disease so there is no cure, but there are management strategies that can improve their comfort.

If you are concerned that your horse may have EORTH or is experiencing oral pain, contact your veterinarian so that they may further evaluate and suggest treatment options.

It’s round bale season! This means taking the proper precautions to avoid any issues feeding over the fall and winter. First, have your horse’s teeth checked to prevent issues that may interfere with proper chewing. Second, make sure your hay bale is placed in a safe horse appropriate hay feeder. And third, after placing the first bale of the season out, monitor your horses for signs of over eating. Many horses like to pig out on a fresh new hay bale which can cause colic. Adding a slow feeder hay net may help prevent over eating.

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!
