We are nearing our Nigerians due dates & it looks like our girl Tilly is going to be kidding first by how she has been distancing, bag fill, and overall her behaviors.
We will be watching her close and praying for a safe kidding πŸ’•

Fingers crossed for a doeling! ( I know I just jinxed myself)

As the kidding season draws near, goat breeders will do things that might seem really weird but are completely normal in the world of raising and breeding goats.

Here are 6 things we typically observe when does are getting close to kidding.

1. Their ligaments will soften
This is the sign that I monitor the most. Goats have two cord-like ligaments that run along either side of the very rear portion of their spine towards their tail. Most of the time, these ligaments are firm. As kidding time becomes closer, these ligaments start to become soft and squishy and usually in the day or so before birth, they will disappear.

2. Examining t***s & under size.
This can vary in with each goat but it's something we keep an eye on. My goats do bag up as their pregnancy progresses, but their udders don’t get full and tight until right before they kid.

3. Discharge
When I see a thick discharge or a long string of mucus, I usually know that kidding is very close.

4. Things will get a little puffy
As kidding time nears, the v***a will look puffy & swollen.

5. Sunken sides or dropped hips
For most of the pregnancy, your goat will look like she is carrying her babies up high in her abdomen. However, right before birth, the kids will drop and the top of her sides will appear like her hips have sunken in.

6. Watch for weird behavior, restlessness & pawing
As a goat begins to go into labor, she’ll just act β€œdifferent.” She might act restless and repeatedly paw the ground, try laying down, and getting back up. She might also stand off to herself away from the herd. This means birthing will start very soon. Sometimes after a goat gives birth to one baby they will also start pawing the ground as they prepare to birth another kid.

All farms handle the goat birthing process differently. Here at our farm we choose to be more hands off and let the mommas birth as naturally as possible. We don't intervene unless someone's in trouble or it's an emergency but we watch for all of the above signs so we can keep watch. The more experience you gain will help you decide how you want to handle the birthing process.

We hope this info helps. Good luck with your kidding season!

We showed Rip that he has family that are yoga goats, and he took it upon himself to show that he too can yoga.

He isn't sure what these positions are called, but Maria enjoyed a nice back massage from the great Rip himself! πŸ˜‚πŸ

It's his facial expressions that get me laughing along with his shenanigans πŸ˜‚
