So very sad to hear about the passing of It’s a Southern Thing. What a significant loss for Amy and Kevin Gumz, as well as for everyone who has been connected to his lineage. This amazing stallion sired so many wonderfully talented Mini Pies! My heartfelt condolences go out to both Amy and Kevin on the loss of Moonpie. I’ve been fortunate enough to own six of his incredible minis and have another one on the way! Thank you, Moonpie, for a great run and for leaving such a lasting legacy.
With great sadness, Kevin and Amy Gumz and Gumz Farms announce the passing of Its A Southern Thing or Moonpie (as known by most). A successful show horse and leading sire, he leaves a legacy that most can only hope to experience. We are blessed to have had this magnificent horse in our lives and his impact on the industry will live on in the show arenas and breeding barns. Thank you to the breeders, owners and exhibitors for not only reaching but exceeding goals that most stallions will never attain. A heartfelt thank you the care providers and support team that made his life a better place for him and us.

Jackson’s friend Kasiah just walked out and hugged on the Ranch horses! Why I love our breeding program to this day is because of the gentle nature of our horses! Prince, Leotyne and Sissy🥰

The Barn Cats! They deserve the utmost respect! They have to deal with the raccoons, opossums, coyotes, mice, snakes, and all for the horses who nuzzle them! If you have barn cats post a picture of them!

EC Photo of the Day- An Undeniable Love
This is Paisley Miller with Believe In The Good, aka "Calvin Klein." They were 10 & Under Trail Champions at Sun Circuit, as well as Reserve High Point in their division. "She’s crazy for horses," says her grandmother, Ingrid Miller. "My husband says it’s a genetic defect! Aren’t we blessed?!"
Thank you to Ingrid for sharing this sweet photo! If you have a great photo of the day, please send it by email: [email protected].

Buddy has been one of the best horses ever added to our barn family! He took care of both my boys in the show pen and riding around the ranch! Safe, affectionate and always one to do his job to the best of his ability. Austin, Peg and I delivered him today to his new friend, Grace Janssen of Desoto! Grace is the most charming young lady and so ready to make Buddy’s stay comfortable! She had welcome signs at the entrance of the stables and on his new stall! Austin and I were so very happy! Thank you Amber Henderson for introducing me to the Janssen’s💯 Lesley Karnes Janssen

Throwback to a Kansas Quarter Horse show in 2003. Austin Mckechnie was an infant guessing about 3 months old at the time. The Horse was Starring Cool. Sweet boy! I loved working with the babies!
One of my favorite memories from this show was my friend Laurie Reeve Bock gave Austin his first pair of western boots! Laurie and I met through Leadership Kansas and also helped us find our first horse trailer in Garden City.
She was such a kind and loving friend. I am grateful to have had her in my life. She lost her battle to cancer in 2009. Having support in the horse showing world is what makes it fun and she always did that so well. 🙏

When you sell a horse and he never is transferred out of your name on his AQHA papers, you worry about him…until you hear from a completely different owner in Georgia! Thank the lord this wonderful family has him and reached out to me! Holly Bakke

"Awards, ribbons and honors are nice, but real satisfaction comes from a parent who trusts one of our horses for their children.
Arthur Edwin McKechnie, Jr. 1922-2000
Welcome to Horse Creek Ranch. We breed quarter horses for looks, ability, show, and pleasure. All of our mares and stallion have excellent temperaments and dispositions. We are located outside of Arcadia, Kansas in the far southeast corner of the state. Quarter Horses have been a part of our breeding program for over 60 years.
In 1999, my father, Arthur E. McKechnie, Jr. was recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association for over 50 cumulative years of breeding American Quarter Horses. Dad's longstanding dedication to the breed served as the foundation for our breeding program today.
In 1947, Dad was given a Candy, a Thoroughbred mare, for a high school graduation present and bred her to Black Hawk P.1222 by San Siemon P.1810 owned by King Merritt of Federal Wyoming. Little Sug P.28,930, a brown mare was foaled thus beginning our family's breeding history of American Quarter Horses.
Dad took mares to Black Hawk over the years including a Steel Dust bred mare, "Lady", and a mare purchased from King Merritt in 1947. In 1950 he leased Bourbon Tek who was by Bourbon by Ding Bob. In 1953 he bought an own son of Leo from Bud Warren, Leo Lightning.
In 1960 he added Dixie Jr., son of Dixie's Paul and a full brother to Paul A, who was Oklahoma Star bred, and in 1964, a son of Sugar Bars was purchased from Bud Warren, Horatio, whose dam was Lena Horn.
Dad continued with these bloodlines until 1986 and added Skip Will Win, a grandson of Blondy's Dude and 5 times bred Skipper W stallion, and Whammy Ball, a grandson of Three Bars tracing back to Little Meow and Spanish Joy. Our current stallion is an own son of Whammy Ball, Whammy Dun a Goldbar “Gold” and is a 2007 dun. We raise horses that are functional and can work on the ranches we have owned in the Laramie Mountains of Wyoming, Arizona, and Kansas. Our horses have successfully been raced, shown in halter, reining, cutting and other AQHA performance classes.
Dad's greatest achievement with his Quarter Horses was making buyers happy and enjoying the feeling he would get when they would come back a few years later for another horse for their child. Dad had repeat buyers from all over the western United States and we are proud to be able to continue the family tradition of breeding and raising American Quarter Horses.
