If y’all have been with SFS for the long haul, you know that has been a huge part of the journey. They opened up right before we moved out to Arcadia to start SFS, and Audrey and Brian and everyone in the St. Pete vegan community has become my family. Aud and Beej have been on the board of directors since day one. They’ve helped me make some of the most excruciating decisions of my life. And now we’re winding down the Gold Dinos and Shelter chapters together.
Today is GDVD’s last day in operation. I’ll have Shelter merch for cheap if you want to grab a tee. The goats and sheep are still at the sanctuary until their new homes are ready for them, so the funds will go toward their care stipends.
If you’re devastated about the closure of GDVD, I encourage you to get out to as regularly as possible. We need this community and what it means. You’ll still see all of us around, because we’re never going to stop finding ways to help animals. Stop by and hug me today! Love you!

All 15 of the SFS little pigs went to their new home today. They were so good and patient and loaded so well (except for Stanley) and I only had to talk myself down from one panic attack. I am grateful to the volunteers who helped out today, and I’m grateful to my friend Emmitt (y’all better be using Emmitt Butts Construction for every dang thing you need done), who always gets it done, and I’m grateful to Stephanie for creating space for my little loves in her life. I’m crying some big tears right now.
You can make a contribution here or at Love Life to help out with transport, fencing, and housing costs for these babes.

So. Here we are. I wanted to let y’all know what’s been happening and a little more about what will be going on as it unfolds.
Y’all know that I’ve been doing this without a whole lot of help for a bunch of years now. I’ve had great caretakers, without whom I wouldn’t be able to keep my full-time job, and I’m so grateful to them. It’s been impossible to find time to host volunteers and it’s been impossible to find vets to do the care tasks. So that’s all been on me. Progressively, over the last couple of years, I’ve injured my back pretty severely. I have two areas of damaged discs that are compressing my nerves and spinal cord. This causes constant numbness in my hands and feet, sharp nerve pain, weakness, loss of balance, and general pain. I’ve been in physical therapy for months, I’m trying to manage my pain in non-narcotic ways, and I’m trying to put off having surgery for as long as possible.
At this point, I cannot flip pigs to trim hooves. I cannot wrestle goats to vaccinate. I can barely lift the bags of feed anymore without causing myself a lot of pain. The fact is, I can’t do it anymore. I’ve always made it work financially and figured it out emotionally, but now it comes down to the care of the animals, and providing the most excellent level of care is what this is all about.
I’m ecstatic to tell you that, as of five minutes ago, I have secured SANCTUARY placement for all of the remaining animals. I did not think this was going to be remotely possible, but my friends have come to my rescue. Please make sure you are following and supporting and . I will update you as animal placements happen so you can keep up with your favorite peeps. These animals are my best friends and they’ve pulled me through the absolute most difficult time in my life. I haven’t been able to deal with the emotions yet, that will come when all the work is done.
I will be joining the board at Love Life so that I can remain connected with the animals and continue to contribute to the animal welfare movement. I’ve discounted most of the merch by 40% if you’re inclined to help with expenses to move animals. Love.

If y’all are Hardline Eric fans, make sure you’re following . Eric and the remaining SFS chickens made their way to their new homes with Stephanie over at Love Life this week. Two of the blue sheds are also being transferred over there in anticipation of transporting over both The Office pigs and The Simpsons pigs, all 13 of whom are moving to Stephanie’s this weekend. Please give her all the gratitude for accepting placement of all these pig friends. It’s a huge gift.
Will keep y’all posted with more updates. Thank you for hanging in with me all these years. If you want to scoop up an SFS koozie or tee, get them while you can at Etsy.com/shop/shelterfarmsupply.

I spent some really beautiful time with Stephanie from here at the farm today. Stephanie has so much on her plate, but when I asked for her help in placing some of the animals, she did not hesitate to try to work it out. I’ll have more info for you soon about which animals will be moving over to Love Life and more info about my intentions to stay involved in the rescue community. Right now, I would love it if you all would make sure you’re following and supporting Stephanie so that she can continue to save lives.
One of the things we talked about today was the way that we, as sanctuary founders, sort of cease to exist as individuals. We put aside our needs and our dreams and our relationships and everything else in the service of the animals. And Stephanie’s message to her board of directors and her key supporters, when considering intaking some of my animals, was that she was grateful and humbled to be able to take the worry and the stress of this decision from me, personally. What a kindness. I don’t know how to express the way I feel in that with words.
I’ll make a post soon about the reasons that my life has to change. I’ll lay out the physical toll the work has taken, the pain I’m in, the plans. All of it. That’s for another day. Today, I would just love for you to rain down love and appreciation for Stephanie and her willingness to help me and the animals.
I love you guys.

Hi, y’all. As you know, I’ve been searching for placement for the animals as I navigate the upcoming changes in my life. Because other sanctuaries are full, I am hoping to be able to offer care stipends as an incentive for others to take them on. has just given $2000 in matching funds for this purpose, and I’d be grateful if you could help match this amount in order to ensure safe placement for these babies. I will keep you updated as animals are placed and through every step of the process. I’m not sure what the final picture will look like, but I appreciate your understanding and patience. Also, please grab some Shelter merch from the Etsy shop! Etsy.com/shop/shelterfarmsupply
Thank you and I love you.

Did you know that it’s World Mental Health Day? Oh, the irony.
Everyone here is ok and accounted for! We have no power, which means no water. But everyone got fresh water yesterday, so we will cross our fingers that the power outage will end quickly. I do have the generator, but the one big enough to run the well pump has to be wired into the house panel, and I’m not a fan of messing around with electricity. We will utilize patience. Lots of branches and standing water. The biggest need right now is to raise money for fill dirt for the flooded areas. Pete needs a dry place to eat his breakfast. Cleanup will be slow and steady. Protecting my mental health by not overwhelming myself.
Thank you for worrying over us. I love you.

Caught a little break in the rain. Going to be quite a bit of water on the ground for a while. (Eric is not amused.) Power is still on. Keep the good juju coming.

Really tired of watching these come straight for us. Maybe y’all could make a donation if you have the means.
