🐴When you need a plasma transfusion in December, and you weigh 25 pounds…you receive it indoors:) This little donkey foal was rejected by its mom and therefore didn’t receive adequate colostrum, resulting in FPT or Failure of Passive Transfer. Luckily this was diagnosed early with a screening IgG test at 24 hours of age. A timely diagnosis and early therapeutic intervention will often circumvent a life threatening medical crisis in a young foal🐴

Happy Vet Tech Week to our amazing kennel technicians Libbie, Abby, and Kenna! These ladies do so much for our patients. They literally spend their days making sure they are well loved on and cared for, have clean sanitary bedding, and potty / walk breaks. They also assist our patients in the underwater treadmill, and help with acupuncture and ultrasound appointments. They are a huge part of the behind the scenes in our practice, and it’s nice to get a chance to brag on them. Thank you Libbie, Abby, and Kenna!!

An unusual case last week resulted in facial paralysis as a complication. Dr. Grace Owen and her technician Taylor provided critical care in the field, and are now using acupuncture and E-stim to help stimulate regeneration of the facial nerve.

Facial Nerve Paralysis (FNP) can occur for many reasons, the most common of which is trauma. In unilateral (one sided) cases, the horse’s ear and eyelid may droop, and often the muzzle is pulled to the opposite side (the functioning side of the face “pulls” the muzzle toward it since the muscles on the opposite side are not working to keep the muzzle in normal position).

Function may return gradually over weeks and sometimes months. Treatment is aimed at decreasing inflammation around the nerve with steroids or NSAIDs in the early stages. Then the use of electroacupuncture helps to stimulate healthy nerve activity to restore proper function.
