California Retirement Management Account (CARMA)

California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) CARMA is dedicated to the goal of providing funding for the rehabilitation, retraining and/or retirement of Thoroughbred horses that have raced in California.

California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 2007 to raise money for retired racehorses. It is responsible for hosting fundraising events, educating owners and trainers on equine retirement, raising awareness, and working to unify the racing industry in support of its equine athletes. Ways in which this is accomplished include facilitating the tran

sition of racehorses off the track through its Placement Program and showcasing the breed’s versatility as equestrian mounts at its Thoroughbred Classic Horse Show. CARMA worked closely with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) to adopt a rule change allowing for a 0.03% deduction from purses to help fund equine retirement. This deduction which owners can “opt-out” of if they so choose, is used to support Thoroughbred retirement farms and other non-profit programs that care for and retrain retired racehorses. CARMA manages a grant request process and since 2008 has awarded more than 4 million dollars to qualified retirement facilities caring for Thoroughbreds. Donations are tax-deductible and may be sent to: CARMA, 285 West Huntington Drive, Arcadia Ca, 91007. (Tax ID #80-0146395).

Meet Aftercare Partner Glen Ellen Vocational Academy, Inc. (GEVA), Northern California’s oldest Thoroughbred retirement and rehabilitation sanctuary, founded in 1995 by Pam Berg on her Glen Ellen Farms. GEVA provides a safe haven for off-track Thoroughbreds and a few unraced horses, focusing on their health, rehabilitation, and well-being. Accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), GEVA has a longstanding reputation for excellence in equine care and sanctuary management.

GEVA was also established as a bilingual vocational school to teach individuals the skills needed to work with horses safely, humanely, and confidently. The program emphasizes responsibility and compassion, aiming to inspire horse owners, trainers, and racetracks to prioritize the welfare of the horses that have served them. Berg’s vision has always been rooted in ensuring that these animals receive the dignified retirement they deserve while fostering a culture of care within the equine industry.

GEVA is currently seeking individuals located near their facility in Glen Ellen, CA who are experienced with horses and to help run the farm. Inquire on their website to learn more: http://www.glenellenfarms.com/geva/

The Glen Ellen Vocational Academy, Inc. (GEVA), Northern California’s oldest Thoroughbred retirement and rehabilitation foundation and sanctuary, has recently received generous grants from the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), and a generous donation from the Fund 4 Habitats.

Founded in 1995 by Pam Berg on her Glen Ellen Farms, GEVA is an equine retirement and rehabilitation sanctuary accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). It has also been accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance for several years. GEVA caters primarily to off-track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) but does also have a few unraced Thoroughbreds. Berg is currently seeking individuals experienced with horses to help run the farm.

As in the past, GEVA received the grants from TAA and CARMA to help provide for the horses’ health and welfare in terms of feed, hay, veterinary and farrier work, and medications and supplements. The funds received from Fund 4 Habitats is a first-time donation that is greatly appreciated and intended for whatever is most needed by GEVA for the horses.

“We are one of the few accredited equine sanctuaries in the country, and we appreciate the repeated support we have received from both TAA and CARMA. We are also thankful for the first-time donation from Fund 4 Habitats. As stipulated in the grants, all money we receive is used solely for the horses,” said Berg.

Berg received Dogwood Stable’s Dominion Award in 2004 for her work with GEVA. The award honors those in the racing industry who work to create a positive influence in the business. Berg was also honored by the Sonoma Horse Council in 2011 by being inducted into their Hall of Fame for her work providing for horses in need.

In addition to being a retirement operation, GEVA was also founded as a bilingual vocational school to teach people the skills necessary to work with horses in a safe, humane and confident manner. “We also hope to instill the sense of responsibility for these horses into the owners, trainers and racetracks, all who benefit from these horses. These horses have earned a comfortable retirement.”
