About
Lexi and Nathan Alto are dedicated members of the Arcata Bottom 4-H Club. They primarily have a beef cattle breeding program, show steers, along with terminal meat goat projects.
This year Lexi planned on raising a steer for the 2020 Redwood Acres Fair, she named him Harley. Harley was born in February of 2019 on the family ranch, she was there when he was born and declared him as her 2020 Redwood Acres fair steer. At weaning in September 2019 the hard work began. Lexi has worked daily to halter break, feed and wash Harley in order to make sure they would succeed as a pair on show day. Everyday since she has spent time with Harley ensuring he is gaining weight and eating well.
Nathan this year planned on raising and showing a market goat for the Redwood Acres Fair. He was ecstatic when he found out his breeder had wethers born in early December 2019. With that he visited the farm multiple times before picking out his wether in February of 2020. He was so excited to finally pick out his wether that he convinced his mom to take it home that day despite not having the trailer. His meat goat Arnie, road home on his lap in the back seat of the Jeep. Since February, Nathan has spent time daily with Arnie. Forming a bond, learning to walk on a halter (although rather frustrating) and making sure they are exercising and eating well to do their best at the Redwood Acres Fair.
Its with heavy hearts we were informed that Redwood Acres Fair was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Without the fair Lexi and Nathan will not get the chance to show case all the hard work they have put into these animals. With this is mind both Lexi and Nathan plan to see their projects through to the end, but will be privately marketing the animals for sale. The projects will come to an end in June. They will be selling tickets rather than the animal. Only 100 tickets for each animal will be sold. Of the 100, one ticket will be drawn and the winner will have the choice to take the animal home live, or we will deliver it to Redwood Meat Co. Processing fees will be covered by the kids.
