Socks is part of that huge ongoing hoarding case of 80+ cats in Queens. This poor cat has been through so much. Please consider giving her a loving home.
Socks is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Despite staff using treats to build a positive association, she has not warmed up. Due to her stress levels, moving out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible is in her best interest. She would do best in a home with adopters willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Socks is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people, we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

Hello, my name is Socks. My animal id is #195159. I am a desexed female black cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 3/7/2024, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.

Behavior History
Behavior Assessment
KNOWN HISTORY:: Socks was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/20/24
In den with her head poked out, eyes wide and dilated, ducks back in when I approach. Remains tense and frozen but is tolerant of pets with tool from inside den. I place tray with chicken in den. After I walk away, she steps partly out of the den and then stares with wide eyes when she sees me.
3/24/24
Socks was in her den. When I lifted the cover, I saw she was at the rear of the den, watching me. I offered her Squeeze Up and Temptations, but she didn’t eat. I petted her with a feather toy, which she accepted. She could not be coaxed out of the den but she was calm.
3/29/24
In her den with face visible through the portal opening, ducking further into the den when she sees me. I offer her squeeze up in a tray and place it near the den opening for her to eat on her own. When I check back later, she hasn't touched it.
3/31/24
Socks was in her den. I lifted the cover and spoke to her. She remained in the bread loaf position, watching me. She seemed calm but did not show any interest in the Squeeze Up or the toys offered to her (or the assessor).
4/4/24
In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She does not come out when offered treats, but when I place a catnip toy in her kennel she pokes her head out to sniff it. When she notices me she maintains eye contact with a tense expression and she will not engage with the treat further. Appears to like catnip! She will likely play with it or investigate it further after I've left the room.
4/7/24
Socks was in her den. I lifted the panel and she stared at me with her big, golden eyes. She didn’t eat the treats which I tossed towards her. I stroked her with a felt toy. She accepted it without moving or responding either negatively nor positively. I ended the interaction and noticed her peeking out at me. I just spoke calmly to her.
4/10/24
Socks has been showing consistent behaviors in our care center and has not shown improvement with daily interactions or enrichment offered. For this reason, the feline behavior team is going to discontinue recording daily behavior notes in Shelter Buddy. She is still going to receive daily enrichment and we will continue to monitor their behavior. Notes will resume if we notice any changes in behavior.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Shy ,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Adult cat socialization,New home adjustment period,Other
Potential challenges comments:: Socks came from a home with about 80+ other cats, it is likely that she was not appropriately socialized to humans.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Socks would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Socks is in her den and completely hidden from view. She cannot be coaxed out when offered treats or spoken to softly. When the den cover is lifted, she is sitting with eyes wide and dilated, ears forward and tail wrapped around her feet. She is tolerant of pets from inside her den with the scratcher tool but remains in place and does not eat treats offered to her. Pick up is not attempted.
During Socks' re-evaluation she displayed similar behaviors, except this time she hissed.
