Bighorn Ranch Bighorn Ranch is a stable that offers boarding, leasing, lessons, horse day camps and wagon rides
(103)

Bighorn Ranch is a small full-service stable located in Big Flats, WI which is 15 miles south of Wisconsin Rapids or 12 miles north of Adam-Friendship just off of Highway 13 on Bighorn Ave. We are family owned and operated and cater to the individual needs of our customers. We began giving guided trail rides in 2006 with our family horses on the miles of trails that are next to the ranch. Since t

hen we have added our popular Day Camps for kids that want to learn more about horsemanship, lessons, training, and boarding. If you would love to take a relaxing ride on a gentle horse, definately check us out and give us a call. We will accommodate small and large groups and ride by appointments so that you won't have to wait!

Unfortunately this is one reason we are not offering trail rides any longer. There are too many inconsiderate drivers of vehicles, atvs and utvs that must believe horses don’t belong along a township road. Things have really changed in Big Flats over the last 10 years. There are new homes going up on Bighorn Avenue and a lot more traffic. The two new owners that bought lots that incorporate the beginning of the snowmobile trail that we were using no longer want horses on it. That means we have to ride along Bighorn Avenue for a half a mile to get to the DNR easement land. It’s just not worth it to us anymore to take the risk of other people being considerate of large groups of beginner riders on the horses. I know that all of you following our page are not those inconsiderate people. Please know that we have always loved your business you gave us. We had 17 years of wonderful times sharing our horses with you on the trail. We will continue to share our horses with people who want to take lessons and want to come to our horse camp program in the summer.

We are looking for someone with tillage equipment to spread our compost and then rip up our 5-acre pasture so we can re-seed it. It was flooded in 2019 and 2020 and weeds have taken it over. It could be done soon as the ground was thawed before this cold snap this week.

Real ethical, experienced equine rescues: take in a sustainable amount of at-risk horses; give them medical, chiropractic & farrier attention; rehabilitation and time to thrive. Only once they have been lifted from the pipeline and re-found themselves, are they evaluated to look for a perfect match with humans who will care and keep them safe for the remainder of their lives.

Why are so many ignoring our top-notch rescues across the US, and instead monetizing horse traders who hold horses hostage online? Are you looking for a New Year’s Resolution? Let’s start by resolving to support our equine welfare organizations who are intercepting horses earlier to keep them from ever entering the pipeline.

We need to stop enabling kill pen brokers and mass bailing rescue scams. If we help our rescue nonprofits take in law enforcement seizures and even owner surrenders, we keep our horses from entering the auction and/or slaughter pipeline. FFS we need to stop taking our horse rescues for granted. Through our lack of support of our first-responder rescues, we are treating them as though they are ineffectual and redundant. When we buy directly from traders/kb’s, we are falsely assuming that “nonprofit org horses are already rescued so they don’t need our financial support.” When we say rescue horses don’t deserve our consideration for adoption, it puts our entire equine infrastructure in jeopardy. Instead we should be showering our rescue nonprofits with gratitude for pouring their heart and souls into turning each horse’s life around. After all they’ve done we can close the deal by sharing out posts, by volunteering, by donating and adopting. Only after all of this can each US equine rescue go out and help the next horse.

There are 5 more days in 2023. We challenge you to donate to the ethical* equine rescue of your choice!

(ethical = transparent rescue policies & finances, a horse-centric intake program with sustainable limits, full vet care and horse training. Euthanasia is for medical or extreme behavioral issues that cannot be corrected AND never for convenience or due to a shelf life time frame.)

Twenty years ago, I competed bridle-less for the first time.
Ten years before that, I made my first attempt at it.

Both times, I failed.
Failed to communicate clearly.
Failed to prepare properly.
And failed to achieve what I had set out to do.
As a teen, this resulted in riding a flat out run away at top speed.
Ten years later, it resulted in going off pattern in my class.

Still, despite the failures, I was still fascinated with the idea of bridle-less riding.
For years, I credited this bridleless desire to the imagery of Walter Farley’s, The Black Stallion, books and movie.
But thirty years, and hundreds of bridleless rides later, I know what it really is.

Bridle-less riding reveals the level of understanding.
The horses understanding.
The riders understanding.
And the understanding between the two.

I remember the first time I was able to put this into words.
I was riding at a horse expo, with hundreds of people watching. I began the demo, showing the cues I teach using with the bridle on.
I explained the process I used…and then I leaned forward and pulled the bridle off.

The shift in the air was palpable.

People sat up straighter, leaned in closer, and watched more intently.

And that is when I realized…taking off the bridle changed THEIR perception of what was happening.

But here is the reality.

NOTHING CHANGED for my horse.

Pulling the bridle off revealed to those who were watching, what my horse and I already knew. We understood each other.

The understanding had been built, layer upon layer, and the moment I removed the bridle…changed nothing for us.

But it changed everything for those watching.

This year marks twenty years since my first bridleless freestyle.

I learned a lot before that point to get me there.
And I’ve learned even more from that point until now.

This week, I’ll be sharing some of that knowledge with you.

Bridle-less riding represents a high level of communication between horse and rider.
That communication is built through consistency and understanding.

These are the things that will improve your communication with your horse, regardless of what tools you choose to use.
