is a compact and hardy foreground plant native to southern Amazonas. Propagate by cutting off and replanting longest upright stems. Soon new horizontally creeping shoots will form from the plant basis and gradually colonize the substrate.

According to , one of the prominent botanists studying and classifying species, Bucephalandra is not a truly aquatic plant. Most Bucephalandras are rheophytes (growing in fast moving waters, such as under waterfalls) attached to rocks, and they spend most of their time above water, outside of rain seasons. Like many hobbyists, though, I grow my Bucephalandras permanently submerged. I think some species handle submerged growth better than others. For example, look at the vibrant colors of this specimen! The clump growing behind it spread from a single plant that I attached to a lava rock two years ago.

For years, this used to grow upright, usually as a midground accent plant. Only recently, when I moved to the foreground giving it ample of horizontal space, its leaves became compact and started growing flat on the substrate.

I tell everyone that I don’t have snails 🐌 in my tank. Technically, that’s not true. I do have snails. Three of these beautiful Assassin snails ( ) that exterminate any other pest snails. How do you keep unwanted snails away from your tank?

In classic Dutch aquascapes, tops are cut and replanted, bottoms are discarded. I sell tops at their best condition to other hobbyists, like this bunch I’m shipping out today. I rely on the plants’ regenerative power to come back even stronger and vibrant from their bottom stem. Pictured here is Bacopa colorata, a pink cultivar of , which originates from the U.S. It has been used as an aquarium plant for many years.
