Because feeding your pet an appropriate amount of food containing the necessary nutrients is so important, Second Chance offers a Food Pantry for pet owners who have a temporary financial shortfall which might affect their ability to provide food for their pet. Our fee-waived pet food pantry provides cat and dog food (and sometime litter) to those living in our service area who are facing financial challenges. This program is considered a temporary and supplemental source of pet food and can be accessed up to twice a month. Contact us to receive an enrollment application. The pet food pantry is made possible through grants and in-kind donations.

From a weight management perspective which is better – wet, canned food or dry food (crunchies or kibble)? Both types of food can provide a balanced diet for your pet as long as the portion size is appropriate. So, to some extent, it may come down to Fido and Fluffy’s preference. Wet food tends to have a richer aroma than dry food, is easier to chew and tends to cause your pet to feel fuller for a longer period of time. It also has a much higher moisture content than dry food which could be important if your pet doesn’t drink a lot of water. Dry food encourages your pet to chew which is helpful in managing tartar buildup on the teeth. Dry food is also more suited to food puzzles or any food dish that slows down your pet’s eating, if that’s a problem.

Adoption Pending!

We currently have a bonded pair of Mini Dachshunds looking for their forever home! Dottie and Dyna are nine and eleven years old and have lived together their whole lives. They a loving, sweet, and laid back girls who love their bed and roaming around outside.
They were returned from foster as the resident cat in the home was not being a good roommate. They do well with dogs their size but with their nervous personalities we are looking for a home without cats or young children. They are pad trained and would make wonderful companions for someone looking to help out a couple little seniors! To schedule a visit with Dyna and Dottie, please fill out the Dog Adopter Profile at the following link. Once it is processed we will contact approve adopters to schedule a meet and greet!

Cutting back on the amount of food your pet receives, with guidance from your vet, may be the first step in a weight loss program. But there are also weight loss foods that your vet may recommend. These foods are typically lower in calories but still have all the nutrients your pet needs. They are often higher in fiber so your pet will feel full even though he is not eating as many calories. Just be sure that any food has a statement from AAFCO on the label stating that the food meets your pet’s minimum dietary requirements.

If you’re following a weight loss plan for Fido or Fluffy that you and your vet have agreed to, it’s a good idea to reevaluate your feeding habits. ~Consistency is important; feed your pet at approximately the same time(s) each day and in the same place. ~Consider feeding 3 or 4 small meals throughout the day, adding up to the overall daily allotment. ~Be precise when you measure out the food so you are providing the proper amount. ~Don’t leave food out for your pet to graze; pick up the bowl once he has eaten the allotted amount. ~Don’t feed table scraps which are typically higher in fat and calories.

When we say that gradual (vs. rapid) weight loss is important for an overweight pet, what exactly does gradual mean? For a cat, for example, a good weight loss target is 8 ounces to 1 pound per month. Dogs can safely lose 1-2% of their body weight per week so that would mean a 50 pound dog could safely lose ½-1 pound per week. Weigh your pet every couple of weeks or so to chart progress and check in with your vet if the weight loss is either faster or slower than expected.

When we talk about overweight dogs and cats it may be hard, as a pet parent, to determine if your fur-kid is pleasingly chunky or actually overweight. Is extra-fluffy fur hiding a trim body underneath? Is your pet just a big animal? That’s where your vet can assist in determining the answer. Your vet will likely use something called a body condition score or BCS which assesses weight on a scale of 1-9 with 1 being emaciated and 9 being very obese. 4 or 5 on the BCS is ideal; at this weight the ribs can be felt but not seen and the animal’s waist is visible both from the side and from above.
