This sweet, senior girl is still looking for her forever home! Sadie is an eleven-year-old mixed breed who would love a couch to snuggle up on after a nice walk. Although she does not do well with other dogs she has been very loving and respectful with people. She did well for her cat introduction however a slow intro would be recommended. With her age and quiet personality she would do better in a home without young children. Call our Kennel Staff to set up a meet-and-greet with Sadie at 802-375-2898 extension 305 and see if it is a match!

Nail care is an important preventative measure to keep your pet safe in winter. Because winter surfaces are frequently wetter and softer than in summer due to snow, Fido’s nails may not wear down as quickly as they do in warmer weather. Too-long nails prevent her paw pads from gripping properly so make sure her nails are an appropriate length to provide the proper traction on slippery surfaces.

Winter weather can create a variety of dangerous conditions for Fido and extra caution is required to keep her safe. ~ When your pet is out for a walk she may pick up de-icing products on her legs, feet and belly that could be toxic if she licks them off. When you get home wipe down or wash those areas so she doesn’t ingest anything that could poison her. ~Stay away from frozen ponds and lakes during your walks. If the ice doesn’t support your dog’s weight and she falls through, it could be fatal. ~Shivering, whining or refusing to move are all potential signs of hypothermia. If your pet exhibits any of these get her inside quickly and monitor her. If symptoms persist contact your vet immediately.

During or after a heavy snowfall don’t let your dog off leash. According to the ASPCA, dogs can lose their scent in heavy snow and become lost. It’s also important to monitor your pet’s tolerance for cold and make appropriate adjustments. Contrary to common belief, all pets are not more immune to the cold than humans. Cold tolerance is governed by many factors – body fat; type of coat; activity levels. Pets with health issues like arthritis, heart or kidney disease, diabetes, and very old or very young animals will be more sensitive to cold. So, for your pet’s well-being, you may need to shorten walks or get Fido a coat.

Winter storms are a fact of life for us here in Vermont. For your pet’s sake it’s important to be prepared for blizzards, power outages and ice storms so when they hit, your pets are safe. Here are some tips: ~Always bring your pets in at the first sign of a bad storm. If conditions are unsafe for you, they’re unsafe for your pets. ~Have an emergency kit of supplies ready and easily accessible should you need to leave your home – include things like your pet’s food, medical records, any medication and water. ~Make sure your pets have up-to-date identification on collars or tags; if your pet is microchipped check that your contact information is current.

This pretty lady's name is Olive. Olive is an approximately three-year-old Shepherd mix who is in need of a specific home due to her potential separation anxiety that causes her to be naughty and chew things she isn't supposed to. She is a big love with people but may be a bit shy at first. She was great with meeting other dogs however we are on the fence if she would acclimate well into a home with cats or young children. To schedule a meet and greet with Olive please fill out the Dog Adopter Profile at the following link.

If the holidays are still in full swing at your house here are a couple more things to be mindful of for your pet’s safety. ~The trash receptacles may be overflowing with food remnants and gift wrapping so keep an eye out that your pet doesn’t help herself to the leftovers. ~Don’t ever leave pets alone where there are lit candles and keep them away from any flames from candles or the fireplace. ~Don’t leave out uncovered bowls of nuts or hard candies, both of which are a choking hazard. ~If you still have house guests make sure they keep any medicines, candy or gum safely out of reach of your curious pets.

When unwrapping the presents Santa has brought, here are some safety tips to keep in mind for your pets: ~Ribbon and tape may look like fun to play with but they can get stuck in your pet’s stomach or intestines so keep an eye on Fido and Fluffy. ~Crunched up packing paper or bubble wrap can make an enjoyable toy – just don’t let them eat it. ~Be especially careful with twist ties from new toys or those little plastic fasteners that attach a tag to a piece of clothing; these can easily get stuck in kitty’s throat. ~Keep a trash bag available and collect wrapping and packing paper immediately instead of leaving it on the floor.

Food is always a big part of holiday celebrations but many of our holiday treats can be dangerous for our pets. ~Alcohol, even in small amounts, can be poisonous so don’t leave cocktails, beer or wine unattended. Be cautious of leaving out foods containing alcohol, such as fruitcake. ~Chocolate is a big no-no for dogs and cats. It contains theobromine, a substance similar to caffeine; the darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains. Theobromine is extremely toxic for dogs and slightly less so for cats because they can’t metabolize it. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive panting, increased heart rate, seizures and even death. ~Other ingredients in holiday foods can cause problems – onions are toxic to both dogs and cats and can result in blood cell damage; raisins and grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs. Keep a watchful eye on plates sitting around at the end of a meal and on buffet tables where there may be foods with these ingredients. If you think your pet has eaten any of these foods, contact your vet or a poison control center immediately.

If you’re hanging stockings by the chimney this holiday, be sure to include ones for Fido and Fluffy. Although your pets will always appreciate a new toy or a bag of their favorite treats, the best gift you can give them is more of you. Schedule an extra brushing session or play session per week for Fluffy. Build in an extra fetch session for Fido each week or take him on an extra walk a couple times a week. This dedicated time with you will be worth more than all the toys in the world.
